Hi Couteau Landing (sometimes has been called Couteau Station-see below) is a Village situated on the St Lawrence River (Signiory of New Longateuil), located in the County of Vaudreuil, Canada East. In the beginning Couteau Landing and Couteau Station were separate villages and later they merged together. It is 45 miles from Montreal and 34 miles from the City of Cornwall on the River. It is said to have a population of 350. There are many Early Church Records in that area to document B, Bapt, M and D Records both RC and Anglican. Early on this area was populated heavily by English people who were Protestants. Even though your Ancestor married in the RC Church I would advise you to look at the Early Anglican Records. I can't recall the name of the Campground near by where I stayed (perhaps its a provincial) but it was close to going into the Montreal Archives to research. I have found both Quebec and Ontario with excellent records (Church, Biography, Court and Land Records). Here is a website that states they have certain information on the Early people of that village and other Eastern Canada locations. I am not sure when you order if you receive a document or not, she does have some mentions of my Ancestors but I obtained the actual documents from the Church Records and Quebec Archives. Thus I have not ordered from her. However if they are only transcriptions they will not serve as documented copies. http://simmons.b2b2c.ca/ Good Luck in your Research Pat R
It's really not much more than a crossroads. Road running east/west from Deferiet and the road running between Carthage and Natural Bridge meet there. Of course, it may have been a bit more "back in the day". I know my uncle and aunt lived there when they were first married in the late 30s. -- Bob Forsythe Permit Project Manager Endangered Habitats Conservancy 619/584-4143 Quoting [email protected]: > Matt > > Fargo is in North Wilna which is near Carthage New York. Hi Denise, I have finally gotten to my genealogy. I have that Joseph Johnson, Edward's son was born in Coteau Landing, Quebec in 1856 and he married Margaret Tierney on Oct. 7, 1877 in St. Mary's church Clayton. I think that I got this from St. Mary's Church records which are available, I think on the internet. If not on the internet they are available in hard copy. The one that I am interested in is daughter Georgiana, Joseph's sister, who married into my allied family of Gosiers. All I have on her is that she was born in Canada. Coteau Landing appears to be midway between Ottawa and Montreal on the St. Lawrence. I don't know how you would start to search there, but my guess is that that is where the parents were from. It would be quite easy to travel from there to Clayton. I think that is all I can do for you. Let me know how this all turns out. Hi Nancy, I have no idea where my Johnson's originated from other than Canada.I haven't even been able to find Edward Johnsons father and mother. Edouard Johnson married Adelaide Henuad(Deschamps) 14 May 1855 in St.Polycarpe.I did find where a Justine Johnson married a Paul Martin S/O Paul & Rose Pilon Martin at St.Polycarpe in 1851 and listed as Justines's mother was a Charl. Lassiserais but no father.Have no idea if Justine and Edouard are related but never can tell.So I keep trying just like you. Unless there is another one I'm not aware of, Fargo is a crossroads outside Carthage, on the road to Natural Bridge. Nothing there but a few houses and at least back in my days in the '50s and '60s, a place called the Fargo Inn. That being the case, your best bets would be to check with Laura Prievo, the Town of Wilna historian and the Carthage Free Library to see what they might have in terms of old Carthage Republican Tribune death notices. -- Bob Forsythe Permit Project Manager Endangered Habitats Conservancy 619/584-4143 Quoting "[email protected]" <[email protected]>: > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: Cofran > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.jefferson/12429/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > Hello, I am searching for anyone who might be able to help me find a > death date for Thomas K. Im not trying to prove anything Im just trying to make contact with researchers of the same Surname no matter what part of Jeff or Lewis co. Im here in Cal and its hard to just cold call everybody with the surname Im looking for so I just throw up a jump ball and see who goes after it. I can write the book on Freeman and Francis in Jeff co and CT but I have yet to meet anybody of the same family via email or whatever. Im just fishing here and hope something comes of it. Not much else out there anymore after 15 years. No Jeff co newspapers here in the Bay Area. GB Perhaps you would like to rewrite your query including some additional information. I noted that you did not include any DOB, DOM or DOD. If you have the Given Names of Freeman, his wife, his children (who they married) and also his siblings in the area and include these dates you might get further respond. You stated a number of collatral families but did not give any indication of how they connected or through whom. You also might want to clarify that a little more. Most times the Church records are not with the local town or village church but have been sent to the Archives. Also, in rural area's the church was often combined with another Town (the Pastor served several churches and sometimes even in the next County) and they all had the same Pastor and records. I have seen emails stating there are not many northern NY Church Records out there, but I have researched for over 50 years and YES there are many out there, but often under another Church (which could even be in another Town or even a bordering County) or in the central archives. It takes experience and diligent searching to locate them. Local Town or County Archives might not have records that are held at these Church Archives. Genealogy was not something that was to be FAST and I always state FAST Genealogy is not Good. Dedicated, diligent and through research uncovers a great many "Gold Mines". The Interent is a good tool but cannot do indepth research nor replace documented records. Regards Pat R

Pat, I really appreciate your helpful tips. I have tried to get at the Plessis Meth Church records but I am told there are no where to be found. I'll try your ideas to see if something can be found. I have tried to locate Thomas Hunter's obit at Flower Library but had no luck going through all the microfilm of newspapers around the time of his death. Never did find Ann Hunter's obit either except for a small blurb in a newspaper llist of deaths. Regarding his death certificate...the parents were just left blank! How frustrating! I never saw any census that said he came from New Hampshire....are you sure you had the right name? I am beginning to doubt the "parents born PA" concept. I did find a Daniel and Sarah Hunter living in town of orleans with 3 sons - one being Thomas - wrong birth year for my Thomas. But as I researched with hopes that the birth date might just be an error, I found that there was that Thomas Hunter living near Watertown - and confirmed he wasn't mine when I saw a copy of his will. Thanks again for your tips. I am open to anyone's thinking at this point to help me knock down the brick wall. Greg Hunter I note you say that he Married Ann Dayton Shannon "about" 1863. Does that mean you do not have their actual Marriage Date or record yet? Since William and Ann Shannon were living in Alexandria in 1850 it would be logical that Thomas Hunter married her in or near that area. If not in the church by the local Pastor. Plessis is near the border of Tn of Alexandria and Tn of Theresa. There are Methodist Episcopal Church Records with the FHC (LDS Mormon Church) on Microfilm that can be ordered at your local FHC for a small fee and be viewed on their reader. These Records for the Church in Theresa are from 1818 until 1943. If you live in or near Watertown NY you can view them at their location. If you have not already reviewed them I would suggest it. The church marriage certificate should indicate the parents of both the bride and groom. You might also try to Snail Mail the: (If you haven't already done that) the North Central New York Conference Archives, Depository PO Box 1515 Cicero New York 13039 Att: Sharon Markowski - Archivist Most archives work with Volunteers and prefer if you want information you take the time to write a letter outlining your request, making it specific as to the information you are seeking, enclose a SASE and small donation. Also you should give them ample time to reply. I would mention both the churches of Town of Alexandria and Tn of Theresa. You mentioned you researched everything available at the Flower Memorial Library. Did you reviewed and read the old newspaper microfilms for an Obit on Thomas Hunter? The Gleanings on the web sites that are available on the Internet are just that "Gleanings" and by no means do they have all of the Obits in the Newspapers listed. There are also Weekly Newspapers that were published in surrounding area's that might of had an Obit listed. Clayton is another possible along with Ogdensburg. Obits vary with the information from Newspaper to Newspaper. All area listed on the NY Newspaper Project Site. http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/nysnp/county1.htm. These are available on Inter Library Loan. You also mention that you have his complete Death Certificate. Were the parents left Blank or marked unknown? I noticed that he did state that they were B in PA on a Census. But remember you do not know if he provided that information or it came from another person in the household. Many times that information is found to be incorrect. On two other Federal Census it states he was B in New Hampshire. So I would question the PA for the parents and look for further information. A few other suggestions that you might not of checked Pat R ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
