    3. Listers: The surnames have just been uploaded. Please check and see if yours is there and is correct, paying particular attention to the address. If yours is not there, please resend it, noting the following items: Surname, in CAPITALS: DIXON Your name, or whatever you want to be called. We have a form, and for us to upload a mailing address, we have to have a name: Nan Dixon. If you prefer to be called Queen Nancy, or the toothfairy, or Chickadee, that's none of my business. Give me a name YOU recognize. Any name. Your email address. PLEASE don't neglect to include your email address. I cannot always get it from the return on your email, and our system unloads an entire page of garbage in which the cybergremlins hide your address before I get to the message. [email protected] Double check your address. You would be totally amazed at the number of people who cannot get their own addresses correct. One outstanding case took four tries to get her correct email address to me. Do tell me plainly that this is to go on our surname list. If you have 10 names, providing, as your listmaster reminded you recently, they have some connection with Jefferson County New York, send them all in one email. Easier for you, easier for me. Just make sure they follow the above rules. Your email, to recapitulate: DIXON (for surname list) Nan Dixon [email protected] Our thanks to you for helping to make our page better. Nan Dixon

We believe William's family came from Ireland to Ontario Canada. William was born approx 1861 and with wife and children immigrated in 1907 to Jefferson County NY. One of his children - Edward Bartholomew Egan then married into the Lawrence family. Does you husband have a connection to this Egan family?

    1. [NYJEFFER] Fwd: need parents of John P. Cole (1861-1881) 94th NY Infantry
    2. I am forwarding this to Mailing List as the Lister (who is subscribed) is having a problem with getting this through. In a message dated 1/8/2007 6:08:19 PM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: > :[email protected] > To:[email protected], > Received from Internet: > > > > Reposting message I sent on Jan 1, 2007. I can receive email from this list but messages that I send do not seem to post. I am trying to identify the parents of John P. Cole [1843-1881] who served in the 94th NY Infantry. He died 4 Apr 1881 at Carthage Village, Jefferson Co, NY. Information from his civil war pension file shows John P. Cole of Carthage married Lucy J. Hatch of Carthage on 11 Jan 1866 by Otis M. Legate, Pastor of Pers. Ch. [maybe Presbyterian Church ?] There is no death certificate of his death but there is a brief mention in the Watertown Daily Times. I would love to see the information in the Carthage newspaper but it seems that there is a gap in the Carthage newspaper on microfilm and the edition for early April 1881 is not on microfilm. The NY state newspaper project lists a paper copy of the Carthage newspaper exists at the office of the Watertown Daily Times. I wrote to them to request a search they did not respond to me. Does anyone have contact with someone at the Watertown Daily Times to learn if they really do have paper copies of newspapers from April 1881 ? Here is the information from his Civil War compiled military service records and pension file records. There are 2 military service records that give different places of birth - one says Champion, NY the other says Hawkins, NY. I have not been able to find John P COLE in the 1860 census, when he should be 15-17 years, although I have looked and looked and looked. First, from the Company A Descriptive Book: John P. COLE, age 18, height 5 feet 8 inches, complexion light, eyes blue, hair black, born: Champion, NY, occupation Blacksmith enlisted 16 Oct 1861 at S. Harbor by Capt Briggs, term 3 years, remarks: transferred from Co H Mar 10, 1863; transferred to Co C Apr 1, 1863 Then, from the Company C Descriptive Book John P. Cole, age 18, height 5 feet 8 inches, complexion light, eyes blue, hair black, born: Hawkins, NY, occupation mechanic enlisted 6 Oct 1861 at S. Harbor by Capt Briggs, term 3 years, remarks: transferred from Co A Apr 1, 1863 The document from his re-enlistement on 4 Jan 1864 at Mitchell's station, Virginia seems to fudge with his age between 20 and 22. It looks to me that the word two was written different from the word twenty, as though it was added to the space after the document was first completed. That would be consistent with the section of the document labeled "Consent in case of minor" that was completed by his commanding officer. John P. Cole born in Hawkins, NY aged twenty [-two] years and by occupation Mechanic ..."Consent in case of minor" says "I, Samuel A. Moffett, do certify that I am the Guardian of John P. Cole that the said John P. Cole is Twenty years of age; and I do hereby freely give my CONSENT to his volunteering as a SOLDIER in the ARMY OF THE UNITED STATES for the period of THREE YEARS. Finally, he may have relatives named LEWIS in Waddington, St Lawrence County in 1865. Regards, Sheila Lofft Strickland Olney, MD
