The FHL catalog shows the 1835 state census for Jefferson County as broken across two films: Census records, A-H 1835 895239 Census records, H-W 1835 895240 I assume that the letters indicate the first letters of towns, so that if I were looking for Brownville, I would want film 895239. Can someone verify that that is correct? Thanks for any help, Kathy

Why don't you and Bob Forsythe email off the message board. Re my recent post about video to dvd transfer - the correction is this: I should not mention specific brands and stores and will avoid that in the future. An online search will show a variety of devices and places to purchase them. They look like VCR's but have side by side player/recorders for VHS on one side and DVD on the other. You can transfer from VHS to DVD and vice versa should you choose to. The machine can also be your everyday player for vhs and dvd movies. The additional information is this - I transferred my first video to dvd and now wanted to make copies to pass along to family members. The more copies I pass around to remote sites (away from my house, the better I feel that I've helped preserve family history). The vcr-dvd machine is fine for the initial copy from vhs to dvd but cannot make a copy from a dvd to a dvd. All my pcs have cd reader/writers but no dvd 'burner'. To 'burn' a copy is to make a copy of one dvd to another. So off to the (online) store I went and bought and external dvd burner (less than $100 as of Dec. 2006). You can buy a pc with a dvd drive/burner built in and some of you reading this may already have that. Don't mistake a dvd player with a dvd burner (recorder). The way they work is to copy the dvd contents to your pc memory. When that is done, remove the dvd just copied to pc memory and put in a blank formatted dvd. Next copy from pc memory to the blank dvd. The dvd burner will come with software that guides you step by step through the process of formatting a blank dvd and then copying to it. This is not something to try with an older pc with limited RAM (memory). It takes a great deal of memory and even with my two year old laptop, everything else crawled to a near stop while the dvd was copying. One nice thing about copying to dvd is that it is done faster than 'real time'. If you want to transfer 45 minutes from VHS to DVD it will take you 45 minutes. To copy from DVD to DVD will take a fraction of that time (half or even just a third of the time). This is because you've already done the 'heavy lifting' of going from analog to digital. The bits and bytes of digital can be hurried along with no loss of picture quality. Note that a dvd burner will not play dvds for viewing - it simply makes copies from one dvd to another by loading contents into pc memory then drawing that back out to be written on a blank dvd. Hope this helps people who might be interested in moving their old format tapes to the next generation (digital) format. You don't see VCR's advertised today any more than you would an old 8mm film projector. To me that is one clue that it's time to make the effort to convert the random tape and structured interviews that I have from as long as 21 years ago. I'm sure there are several manufacturers of similar machines (for vhs to dvd) and you would do well to comparison shop. Mine happens to be a JVC (model DR-MV5S) purchased at a local (Maryland) Best Buy in October of 2005. Electronics change so fast that I'm sure there could be other brands available and the particular kind I bought may not still be available. The key thing is to be sure it plays *and* records dvd's. There are different kinds of blank DVD's you can buy and you want to buy the type that your machine can record on. The user guide will tell you which type to buy. Most DVD players will play many formats but the recorders may record to just one or two formats. I'm doing a simple wholesale transfer from tape to dvd. There are people who will professionally do transfers, add captions, special effects, etc. for a fee. As for 8mm, I did convert some old movies to VHS years ago. I did it what I could only call the 'old fashioned' way. I did it at night in a darkened room with a movie screen and projector set up and my video camera on a tripod aimed at the movie screen. I had the sound turned off on the video camera (it had a removable microphone). This made little difference to the movie as it also had no sound to begin with. This way (turning off sound on the video camera) no extraneous sound (like the sound of the projector) made it onto the videotape. In retrospect, I could have left the sound on and narrated on to the video tape the names of people, places etc that I was seeing on the movie. I did have an aunt do some narration for one film. I do keep a separate printed index of photos and films to id who is on which. Many of the old films passed on to me date back to the early 1940's. I hoped to find one of my parents marriage from 1941. Several films that my uncle had spliced together came apart and I was not able to continue with some films. Now that I've begun transferring my old VHS tapes to DVD, the old 8mm films (by being on VHS) will become part of that process. If you no longer have a working projector, there are people/firms who will professionally do a transfer of the old films for a fee. I was fortunate that some of my relatives still had working projectors. Using a profession might (I wouldn't guarantee it) avoid the problem of spliced films coming apart where they were spliced. It's something you could ask about. Video has been around for some time and if anyone reading this has any precious tapes you may do well to consider transferring them to video. I'm having very good results with my 'dual' machine. It is literally a 'one touch' operation where I put the vhs tape in the left side, a formatted dvd on the right side, press the one button and sit back and watch the old tapes while it runs. That machine cost $300 a couple of years ago. If it is like most electronics, it is probably a bit cheaper now. Right now I am in the process of having more movie film put to DVD's which too holds my five generations. My daughter's baptism, present and holding her was her gr gr grandmother, next to her was her daughter,(my daughters gr grandmother)next to her was her daughter(my daughters grandmother)and next to her was her daughter,me.We're were approx. 22 1/2 yr. age span between the five of us. A number of years ago I had all of my parents movie film put to VHS tapes for my father one year for Christmas. He was in Indiana at the time spending time with my brother and his family.I received a phone call from my father a day or two after Christmas, telling me how he cried like a baby seeing his parents and us kids along with my mother from so many years ago.He had forgotten about the movie films and wasn't really up on VHS tapes he only watched game shows at the time.To make a long story short,he wore the tape out.Luckily,I had the master copy.Back then it was a small fortune to transfer to VHS.To do 200' was $150.Now it can be done for $49 for 250' and each additional foot is $.06. and that is straight to DVD. One thing worth mentioning before I cut this off.If you do have VHS tapes and are not going to be transferring them any time soon,be sure to run the tapes fast forward and then rewind them to avoid any mildew or dampness ruining them.Every couple of months, the family tapes I have I run threw the VCR so the tapes don't stick together. It may be the climate you are in but between Florida and now Puerto Rico the humidity will ruin them for sure. thanks for this info, I will be around the corner from my Best Buy (NY) in a day or two and will check with them. Vicki in WNY researching these from NY and PA mostly: Arwin, Baker, Barrett, Brokaw, Brandow, Butler,Carnes, Crowe, Dean, Ferris, Golden, Havens, Hendershott, Hoxter, Huber, Isaman, Jenks (all variations), Kelleher, Knapp, Koons, Lundrigan, Makeley, McDermott, Mehlenbacher, Merritt, Neu, Northrup, O'Connor, Osincup, Patterson, Powers, Quick, Rahmlow, Robertson, Robinson, Root, Ryan, Slaughter, Stocum, Wade, White, Wilcox, Wright, Van Oxx (Oxx), Vanbenschoter, Yeckley, Young, Zimmerman. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Sun, 21 Jan 2007 12:25 PM Subject: [NYJEFFER] Videotape to DVD and 8mm to VHS I'm sure there are several manufacturers of similar machines (for vhs to dvd) and you would do well to comparison shop. I have some tapes from the 80's that I would like to do over on disk form. Also does anyone know how I could do the same with some 8mm films from when I was a girl? Video has been around for some time and if anyone reading this has any precious tapes you may do well to consider transferring them to video. I'm having very good results with my 'dual' machine. It is literally a 'one touch' operation where I put the vhs tape in the left side, a formatted dvd on the right side, press the one button and sit back and watch the old tapes while it runs. That machine cost $300 a couple of years ago. If it is like most electronics, it is probably a bit cheaper now. One more thing - the more copies I have at various different houses (my own brothers and sisters, my in-laws), the better I feel. The content is irreplacable and catastrophes (fire, flood, theft) do happen. Russ From: [email protected] Reply-To: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [NYJEFFER] Five generations on a Videotape Date: Sat, 20 Jan 2007 13:09:22 EST Russ, I enjoyed reading about how to conduct interviews and such ,as well as your experience with having the five generations all on tape.It is a fantastic feeling to be able to see them all again all together, as one fondly remembers their relatives. That's my $.02 worth. And Russ, again, thank you for posting the info. This list is a treasure of information.
