Adam Helmer did indeed make a famous run to warn people of an Indian attack. You can buy a really neat map from the Herkimer Historical Society that maps out his run with notes about it. Also in Cayuga County on Cottle Road (near Weedsport) there is a historical marker for where Adam Helmer lived there. Also a very interesting book on the events of Herkimer County and the rest of NYS is Ther Wilderness War by Allan W. Eckert. Thought it must also be a trail of graves of those who didn't make it.
