Hello All, One of my ancestors, George Nellis, rode a Columbia high wheel bicycle from Herkimer, NY to the west coast in 1887. He left Herkimer on May 24 and arrived at the Pacific coast on August 3. His ride was 19 days less than the only other ride. Does any one know which roads he might have used and what travel might have been like about that time? The bicycle that was used was on display at the Edison Institute in Dearborn, MI from 1915 to 1947. It is currently on display at the Herkimer Historical Society. Does anyone have any copies or photographs of any material that described the trip and the conditions which George encountered along the way? Since George was Editor of the Herkimer "Democrat" there must be some source material available which he wrote about his trip. Let me know if you have access to any of this material.
