    1. [NYHERKIM-L] Morehouse family
    2. I would be interested in communicating with anyone who is researching the early Morehouse families of Herkimer Co. The earliest member appears to have been one John Morehouse, who died before 1809, and it appears he had at least two sons, Czar D. Morehouse (who is later found in St. Lawrence Co.) and Levi C. Morehouse, who served in the War of 1812 in a Herkimer Co. unit. Below is a synopsis of my family, which I believe is connected to these Morehouses: MOREHOUSE. Pierpont Morehouse was born between 1775 and 1780, location of birth unknown. He ws a carpenter by trade, but does not appear to have ever achieved prosperity. He first appears in the 1820 tax records for Burlington Twp., Bradford Co., PA, and appears in those records (except for gaps in 1824 and 1835) through 1837, as well as in the tax records for nearby Springfield Twp. for 1829 through 1834. He is listed, along with others in his household, in the 1820 and 1830 censuses for Bradford Co., PA. His mortgage, as well as that of his (probable) son John, was foreclosed upon during the Panic of 1837; he thereafter disappears from view. Children identified so far include Abram, born 14 September 1829 in PA, presumably Bradford Co., and probably John, born 16 February 1810 in NY, Samuel B., born 16 June 1821 in PA, and Joseph P., born 5 February 1826 in PA. There were perhaps a number of daughters, indicated as girls or young women in his household in the 1820 and 1830 censuses, as yet unidentified. Family tradition is that Pierpont's wife was of German ancestry and part Mohawk Indian. A biography of John states that his ancestors were early settlers of New York, of English and "Dutch" ancestry. John' later lived in Herkimer Co., NY, where there were other Morehouse families (who had married descendants of the early Palatine German settlers of that area). I suspect these are part of my family. Dave Morehouse Hopkins, Minnesota
