The early Herkimer County Deeds were taken by Oneida County when Oneida was formed from Herkimer in 1798. That is a good thing as the Herkimer records burned in 1804 and the early stuff was safe and sound in another county. The records for Oneida County are complete from then on, so you may have a good chance of finding what you are after ... IF If they bought land If the deed was recorded If the index is right If they are not actually recorded in the Mortgage books, or in a will you get the picture I am finding that about 1/2 of these early deeds were never recorded and that while many were recorded within a few years many were not recorded for some 20 years! I'm working on transcribing all the early deeds for part of Madison County and have very successfully used the records of early Herkimer, Oneida, and Chenenago counties in addition to Madison Co's deeds. I just got another roll of film in at the LDS Family History Center but they are closed for the holiday week and I am going to go nuts wanting to get back to work! Dan W.
