Hello listers I found some tid-bits of Stewart information and have put together some possibilities - My great-great grandfather was Joseph Stewart, said to have been born in Warren, Herkimer Co. NY His father is said to have been a John Stewart who along with 5 brothers were among the first settlers of Ft. Warren, NY. I found a Jonathan Stewart listed on an "on-line" 1800 census for Warren, Herkimer Co. NY with 2 males under 10 yrs; 1 male between 26-45; 2 females under 10 yrs; 1 female between 26-45. According to the Herkimer Co. NY web page the town of Warren was one of the earliest Herkimer county town formed from German Flatts in 1796. >From the Family Tree Maker CD 143 NY in the Revolution and the War of 1812: "Third Division--Service of the Refugees and Others, in the State of Connecticut" - STEWART, JOHN — Capt. Smith, Col. Elmore, Cont'l at German Flats 1776. If this is "my" Joseph Stewart's father it may be a clue as to why one reference said that Joseph was born in Connecticut. Also note - Cont'l at Germans Flats. It was listed in the "Past and Present" that the grandfather of "my" Joseph Stewart came to America in 1745, and was in the massacre of Ft. William Henry (1756). Ft. William Henry was located on the southern tip of Lake George, Warren Co., NY. AND - just a few miles north of Ft. William Henry is the town of Bolton and a couple of miles north of that is the town of Bolton Landing. "My" Joseph named his youngest son (my great grandfather) John Bolton Stewart. Also - I entered for driving directions from town of Herkimer NY to Fort William Henry - it gave me 103 miles and the town of Warren in Herkimer Co., is about 21 miles south of the town of Herkimer. I also found a William Stewart that inlisted on June 10, 1755, which coinsides with the Fort William Henry engagement. On Family Tree Maker CD354, Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1538-1940 I found several with the Stewart surname coming in 1745 - and there were 3 William Stewarts - however the one that I liked was a William Stewart who arrived in Philadelphia, PA 1745. I liked this one because it is not stated that he was endentured as the others were and I have a hard time imagining that if this person were endentured for 4-7 years he would have would have been hard pressed to have 5 sons - not to mention a possible daughter or two scatted through in that short of time. Whew - guess that's it for now. I have no hard evidendence - all conjecture but very interesting to me. - by the way, all of this is very tantilizing on the map. Dot Dotsipe@aol.com
