    3. Hello List, My husband and I took a lovely drive to the south of Herkimer County yesterday to find my ancestor's original homestead. We used the map of the area created in the 1860's. We found the homestead of my ancestor, Jacob Fikes, on Peacock Hill as shown on the map. The road was then called Fike Road, now it is called Sickler Road. Nothing there now but rolling fields. There used to be several farm homes and barns, owned by family members, a cheese factory, school, and hop sheds. My question is: why was the area called Peacock Hill? Is it still called Peacock Hill? The countryside there is absolutely breathtaking. What a great place to live. Thanks! Lida Fikes Perfetto
