Hi David I would suggest that you go to your closest FHL (Mormon Church Library or LDS) and order films on the churches in and around that immediate area where you must have found your ancestors living. . Here is the url to look up the films that you would be interested in. Url is: www.familysearch.org/ Go to Place search and you will get films in that area. In the early days many of the churches were Dutch Reformed and a few were Lutheran in this Mohawk Valley Region. This is a good way to obtain a record and get a photocopy for my documentation at the same time. I have also been very successful using them. It takes quite a bit of time to go through these films and it is much easier if you have the date of birth (or approx.). But remember they sometimes did not get baptized for a year or two after the actual birth since many of the pastors were traveling from place to place and did not always come on a regular basis. So dates could show both a birth and baptismal record or just the baptismal record. Although you can get the film for $3.25 for 1 month, I usually get the film for the extended period for a $9.00 fee and the reason being is I have had to resend for the same film in the past as I got further into my research and found out some other Surnames that were of interest to me. This way I just keep returning to the local FHL library as needed and review the films for those additional names as I go along. I also find that you sometimes have to go through a film more than once to find your record especially if the records are handwritten or perhaps in German as some are in that area. But if you are not sure you can order it for $3.25 and than extend your time for only the balance of that $9. fee. The Library will have a reader that you can schedule to use. The volunteers at these libraries are very helpful and usually very knowledgeable on Genealogy. They have films of other records that might be of help in your research also. I find that their Census films are far more accurate than Ancestry. Com on the Internet. Some libraries have the books copied from these records with the same material in them, but I tend to prefer the film as the more records are transcribed the more errors can occur. Remember the spelling can show several different ways on the same film so look up your variations of the Surname before you start. Although there may be many variations of a Surname I want to have my document show as the surname is shown in the original records. A record is a record and should not be changed or corrected to what you might think it should be. Good Luck and enjoy the Family History Library which should be at the Mormon or LDS Church closest to your community. Call ahead and get the hours they are open. Regards Pat R
