I have 2 books that I would gladly do lookups for anyone. These are "The Goulds of Rhode Island" by Rebecca Gould Mitchell (1875) and "The Kirbys of New England" by Melatiah Everett Dwight (1898). There are many other surnames in these books so even if you don't belong to a Kirby or Gould, you may still benefit! Hello, When I searched my MA ancestors, I went to the NorthEast National Archives. I found many of my naturalization papers, as I, also, live in MA. Since I cannot drive to either Herkimer County, NY or Morris County, NJ, I am wondering how I can get a list of "possible" naturalization cards (like we have in MA -- the cards in the drawers)? Do such cards exist in NY and NJ? The naturalization records I am searching for were in the first half of the 1800's. I am hoping to find someone who will check these names, and then look these few records up. I'll gladly pay for the service. The people I am looking for: Malcolm CAMPBELL. b. 12/16/1781, Inverlussay, N. Knapdale, Argyll, Scotland, d. 1852 in Russia, Herkimer Co, NY. His wife was Sarah/More (SMITH). Malcolm CAMPBELL arrived in the US on 9/13/1807 (acc. to a list he wrote during the War of 1812 -- he was still a UK citizen then). One of his ch., named Dugall CAMPBELL, also immigrated (he was a child). I hope to see if Malcolm (or son, Dugall) was naturalizated after 1812. Therefore, I hope to find someone to check Malcolm CAMPBELL from 1812-1852 to see if he ever became a US citizen, and, thus, a card. His son, Dugall CAMPBELL, was b. 1803 in Scotland. Obadiah/Abadiah PARKER. He was b. 1802-1803 in Bilston, England, and d. between 1833-1850 in Boonton/Pequanock, Morris County, NJ. He arrived in the U.S. between 1830 to 1833. His wife's name was Mary ---. He had two sons in England: Joseph PARKER b. 1826 and George PARKER b. 1830, both b. in Bilston. They were little, and prob. immigrated with their father. Their third son, Obadiah PARKER, my ancestor, was b. in Boonton, NJ, in 1833. Thus, I need to search Obadiah PARKER's naturalization card from 1830-1850. And also see if his two sons, Joseph PARKER George PARKER, were naturalized as well when they were older. I'm sending this post to the Herkimer County (NY) List and the Morris County (NJ) List. Any help appreciated! I don't even know where to look! Again, I hope to find someone who will look up those names, and if card(s) were found, to pull those papers. Thanks! Hello, I haven't been on this list in a long time. I am trying to figure out which ship my ancestor arrived on. According to an 1812 List of UK Citizens, my Malcolm CAMPBELL (as well, perhaps, his wife, Sarah More and his son Dugall) arrived in the US on 9/13/1807. I am wondering if those who know more than I about Herkimer County (Russia/Newport) might know if there was a popular travel route in 1807; i.e., did many of those Scots (his neighbors) at that time travel via ship to NYC, or might they travel via ship to Canada? And after they arrived in either NYC, Canada or other places, how did they get from the coast to Herkimer County? If I can get some "perhaps," that will give me less ports to seach. I do know that his arrival was, again, 9/13/1807. But I guess it's possible that his arrival could be by ... horses? If anyone has any ideas at all where I could start (are there ship arrivals on line? why did Scots leave and go to Herkimer County at that time?), please let me know. All the best. Betty G. Hi, Joel. We've been in touch before, regarding the O'Haras in Herkimer County. I'm the Pat O'Hara (Reilly) who grew up in Albany. Anyway, my Grandma O'Hara was a Kelley, born outside of Cooperstown in Schuyler Lake. I was working there last summer, and had time to do some research, but couldn't find any records of where they lived. I was about to give up when I thought of school records. I found my grandmother, Mary Kelly, age 5, and her brother, Patrick, age 7 in School District No. 8, in 1877. So, you might ask to browse through the boxes of ancient rosters to look for Lacounts. They have them organized by year. -----Original Message----- From: joel voorhees [mailto:joelv@ntcnet.com] Sent: Monday, April 08, 2002 1:09 PM To: NYHERKIM-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NYHERKIM] Lecount / DeVoe Hi, My grandmother Inez was born in 1871 in Boston had the surname Lecount/LaCount. Her father was Thomas Burnham Lacount. An unknown cousin I located in California through a GenWeb site claims her family said Thomas Burnham Lacount (our grandfather) was born in Cooperstown area. I went to Cooperstown last summer and found no Lacounts. I have found out that some family members spell the name Lecompte. I found them living in Somerville, MA. I have found many Lecounts/Lacounts in searches listed in NYC areas. Can't connect to any of them. Last week a nice person answered a posting I had on the MA list and I am not sure if these Lecounts/Lacounts are related to me. I'm at a brick wall. I looked in my family tree and none of my grandmother's siblings had the name of William. Here is the letter which he gave me permission to send to anyone: It seems like Somerville, MA (Suffolk County) was the place the Lecounts lived in and also Wellfleet (Cape Cod) Ma. Don't think any of this is a lead for you. My grandmother ran away when she had to get married. Her family never could find her because she married a man named Buhlman and they heard his name was Bowman so no matter how hard they tried to find her because they spelled the name wrong and internet searches weren't known - they never found her. I think her father was a minister and she disgraced the family. Betsy -------------- ---------------------- ---------------- Dear Betsy, The woman I knew was Helen L. Lacount, she was born on December 18, 1885, and died in early November, 1980. She was born and died at the family home at 34 Day Street, Somerville. I got to know her as a teenager and she was already an elderly woman. I did yard work for her and enjoyed keeping her company, and came to love her very much. She loved to talk about the past, which was all about her in that house. Her parents had been married in 1870, and bought the house she still lived in in 1875. Their names were Eugene Lacount, who had married a woman named Caroline (I think) Marsh. They had four children, Osgood, born in 1871, Edwin, born in 1873, Gertrude, born in I believe 1882, and Helen, born in 1885. Neither Gertrude nor Helen married, so had no children. Both Osgood and Edwin did marry, but I don't remember the names or number of their children. All of them are buried in Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge. Both Edwin and Osgood had other first names they did not use, and I don't remember what they were. Edwin was a Methodist minister, and one of his churches was the Epworth Church on Massachusetts Avenue, which has a close affiliation with Harvard. He lived to a very old age, dying in 1970 or 71, as I remember it. He was buried from that church. The family also had a close connection with the College Avenue Methodist Church in Somerville, and in fact, the chapel there is the "Lacount Chapel". Osgood and Helen's names appear on a plaque affixed to the church. Their father served in the Civil war, and was badly wounded and spent a good deal of time in a Southern prisoner of war camp. I remember Helen showing me a few pictures of him in his Grand Army uniform which he wore quite proudly. He ran a mattress company in the Haymarket section of Boston and only retired after his wife died in 1936 or 7. He died in 1939 at the age of 95. Gertrude had contracted TB of the bone from unpasteurized milk as a toddler, and she never worked. Helen went to Boston University at a time when women didn't generally go to college, graduating in 1907. Her hopes of being a social worker were dashed when her mother and sister both got ill at the same time, and she basically devoted her life to her sister who didn't die until 1964. Having lived into old age with an affliction that should have killed her as a child. They seemed to me a rather remarkable group of people. I hope this helps you determine if there is a connection to you, and if I can help, let me know. Sincerely, Michael Schofield Boston, Ma Donna DeVoe wrote: > Sarah E. DeVoe b. 1840, marr. William H. Martin M. BURST is listed in Herkimer County, NY. I remember looking at the index on this, once, and dismissing it for poor timing. I am not now so sure! My Martin BURST lived much of his life and died in Luzerne County, PA. He had been in the Civil War and lost a leg in that war. He was my g,g-grandfather. He married thrice, my ancestress being the 2nd wife. I have never successfully found his roots. He has been listed in two or three ways, depending upon the source. I am looking for the address/place of birth and baptismal for Amos NICHOLS born abt. 1804 in Salisbury, Herkimer County, NY and his relatives as listed above. Fran (LAKE) KING
Is there anyone on this list who might be able to help me with a "problem" I'm having? Robert Leslie BARNHART, b. 1862, married Fannie ZURLINDEN of Little Falls, b. 1863, supposedly in 1884. I had always thought they got married in Pittsburgh, PA, since that was where Robert lived at one time. But, there's a better possibility that they were married in Little Falls. Any way anyone can find out for sure? Thank you, Robert D. Mollenauer, Jr. Ridgecrest, CA on the edge (sort of) of Death Valley
