Has anyone done work on JAMES HART who was a Lawyer in Herkimer Co., in the late 1800s? In the 1850 census there is a CATHERINE HART Living right next door. I was wondering if they were related. I got some info on James from the Historical Societies when I was requesting info on my JOSEPH HART. (the brickwall) I really don't think my Joseph and James were related as in the 1880 census it was checked that Joseph could not read or write. Do you think one brother was a lawyer and another could not read or write? My Joseph was born in NJ. I cannot find what happened to Catherine after 1850, but she does has males living with her who were in the age range of my Joseph. Hoping to hear from someone. Mel melmac7@earthlink.net
Cathy, Sorry to hear of Claires passing. She and I exchanged emails a while back about her family and life here in Floyd NY. If I can ever help you in this area, feel free to ask. Neal Carrier
Dear List members: I too send my deepest sympathies upon the loss of Mom. My Mother died Mar. 31, early Easter morning this year. I was with her for many years and while I know she's in a much better place and at peace, I miss her and am dealing with her loss. The day we were planning her funeral, our niece announced she is pregnant with her first child. And so, the cycle of life continues but we cherish the memories of those that have gone from our sight. I know this Mother's Day will be special and sad at the same time. Remember to call or visit "Mom" on Sun., Mother's Day 2002. Sharon in Mn.
Hi Cathy! So sorry to hear about the passing of your mom -- I was one of the members of the list who corresponded with her a bit -- we shared the info about the Jury mill in Sauquoit and some other bits. Feel free to contact me if/when you need more help in that area. Again, my heart is sad. Claire, my condolences on the loss of your mom. My mom also died April 28 but in 1978. She helps me from the other side as I'm sure your mom will. She is not gone, only temporarily away. Hello list, I need to thank the list members and listowner and ask for help. My mother, Claire Cranford amma@nc.rr.com has passed away. She died on April 28, 2002. She was researching JURY and related surnames. I will be taking over her research when I am able to come back to it, and will be joining the list as well but through my machine. Will the listowner please unsub my mother at the above address so as to keep me from doing it for her? I can't bring myself to do so. Again, thank you to all who were kind to her and helped her in the past. Many of you were a great source of pleasure to her and made her life brighter. She has all her genealogy questions answered now that she is with her family of the past in her afterlife, but I will pick up her torch here on Earth until I can be with my mom again. Sincerely, Cathy Cranford pastseeker@nc.rr.com

Hi I actually found a grandson of Harlan's living in Florida about ten years ago. I really don't have a lot on the family but I will find his letter and scan it. My interest is in Lottie Wise, sister to my g-g-grandfather Charles Benjamin Wise of New Woodstock, NY. His father, David, was born in Baden, Germany about 1818. Just got home from work and I am tired but I will find my files in the morning. Joanne
I have Warren J. Diefendorf married to Charlotte {Lottie} Wise in Madison Co., NY about 1895. Their son Harlan was born in 1895 and they owned a hotel are buried in Clockville I think. Joanne
Joanne, your bits of Diefendorf help me just heaps trying to piece this family together. Could I make you happy by sending (USPS) the bits I have and ask you to see what seems to be correct and what cannot be? I really need help. I don't know why, but cooperation from this bunch is difficult to get. Will you please tell me where your interest fits in this line? It might help to know what I should look for. In 1997 I asked one of this family to help. Here it is, almost five years later, there are pieces, only. Your query helped me an awful lot. I had some identified, but didn't know how related until your last message (below). randy, Seattle suburb. ----- Original Message ----- From: <AlphaGene@aol.com> To: <NYHERKIM-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 03, 2002 11:52 AM Subject: Re: [NYHERKIM] Aaron Seamans & Lillis Martin of Northampton, New York > I have Warren J. Randy, Do you have any Diefendorf in Madison County? Joanne
This is a timeline of the formation of the counties which would have contained the area described as Northampton in your ancestor's pension papers in 1844, over the timeframe of interest: Albany county was formed in 1683. Tryon county was formed in 1772 from Albany county. Tryon was renamed to Montgomery county in 1784 (Tryon was a Tory). The town of Northampton was formed in 1799. Fulton county was formed in 1838. So, you should concentrate your efforts in the three counties of Albany, Montgomery and Fulton depending on the specific time-frame in which you're looking for information. According to your earlier message, looking for the farm location, Albany or Montgomery county records would be your best bet. One thing to note: I believe that Northampton in 1844 could refer to one of two places in Fulton county at this time (and possibly today as well). It could be the larger region of the town of Northampton (most likely), or it could be a reference to the hamlet of Northampton (aka Fish House) that is located within the town at this time. You mention pension papers in 1844... was your ancestor a Rev. War veteran? Could he have been "given" the land for his service to his country (and his parents followed him to this new property)? I'm not "up" on Rev. War veteran research, but I understand that many soldiers were "paid" for their service to their country by being given land, rather than money, by the newly formed government. Hope this helps, Lisa
I tried the same thing, Michael, with no results. I've been looking for John and Persis Shaw all my grown life. When I found out their son, Warren Shaw, was born in 1808 in Johnstown, Fulton County, I joined that Roots Web site...no luck. I wrote to the Historical Society over there...no luck. I found out Warren Shaw married Samantha Millington from Russia, Herkimer County, so I joined that site....no luck. I sent thirty dollars to that Historical Society....no luck. At one time that area was Tryon County....no luck there either. A very nice lady, a Shaw researcher, Deborah Mason, spent days trying to help me...no luck. I don't know what the answers are, but I can give you plenty of questions to try. Don't give up. Michael wrote: > Pat, > > I apologize for the confusion. Pat, I apologize for the confusion. The reason I posted to 3 different counties is that Northampton once existed Montgomery Co. and now it resides within the boundaries of Fulton Co. Herkimer & Montgomery Co. histories, to me, seem to be intermingled at times because Montgomery Co. was formed from Herkimer Co. (or vice versa - I get those mixed up), or something like that. Anyway, I just wanted to cover the bases. I know that my ancestors passed away in Northampton, but I am trying to find out information where they may have been buried & get ideas on where I could research or write to in order to inquire about where they might have been buried.
