The following obit is one I posted to the Allegany Co. Obituary board -- anyone who can claim him, can have the submitter's name changed. THOMAS J. EVANS of Black Creek, the last member of Barlte Post of the Grand Army of The Republic who saw service at the front, died at his home Monday afternoon, Nov. 4. He had been in failing health for several years, but his last illness was of but a week's duration. Thomas Jefferson Evans was born at Schuyler, Herkimer County, July 17, 1844, the son of William H. and Anna EVANS EVANS, both natives of Wales. Mr. Evans' family came to the vicinity of Farmersville when he was a child, and there he was married in 1866 to MIANDA J. HILLMAN, who survives her husband. he enlisted at Utica in the 2nd New York Heavy Artillery, Company D, and saw much active service. He was in several engagements and was wounded at the battle of Spottsylvania Court House. Hi there: We have extensive articles about the town of Fairfield on the Herkimer/Montgomery Counties GenWeb page, thanks to our section editor, Jane Dieffenbacher, Fairfield Town Historian. Jane also provided us with early 19th century student lists of the medical students as well as detailed information about the medical college at Fairfield. Further info can be gotten from Jane, whose email address is directly on the page. Judy There is (was) a hamlet named Fairfield near Middleville, NY and north of Herkimer. It was the site of one of the first medical schools so I've been told. The school building may have disintegrated by now as there was an unsuccessful attempt to have it placed on the National Historic register. I would look to Middleville town clerks for a lead to where Fairfield records are kept today. I am new to this list and am looking for my ggg-grandparents, Abel FOWLER and Mary EDDY. Abel was born in RI abt. 1781, but was probably in NY state by 1800 (?). Married Mary Eddy in Fairfield (?) abt. 1808. Their first son, Anson Fowler, was born Feb. 1809 in Fairfield. I have no other info about them in this time frame. By 1820 census, family was in Genessee County. Abel allegedly found in the War of 1812 at "Battle of Plattsburg" - would there be a connection between the Herkimer County location and this battle? Would very much appreciate any help. Judy Usher in FL
Dear Judy, I just got information about an ancestor from the Albany area serving in the Battle of Plattsburg. Actually, he was "drafted" to go north to defend the area against British attack, but arrived after the action. I'd suggest you look for 1812 pension papers. The ones I got listed where he lived when he was called up, age, birthplace, and included a sworn statement identifying his brother and some valuable info about him. Good luck, Jennifer Clark [email protected]
Errol and Valerie: I've noticed the Jordan Gray name before on information about Herkimer Co. I have a Roswell Chapman and his wife, Rhoda Gray living in Herkimer Co. in 1800. I don't know the parents for either of them, or where they were married. By chance, does your Jordan have a Rhoda in his family? I have a few relatives from the late 1700's that were supposed to have been born on a place called Dilleburgh, NY. Does anyone know where this place is? Does it still exist?
I am seeking information about the parents of my great grandfather Frederick Putman from Root, Montgomery County, NY, born about 1798. He was in Root for the 1840 census. He, his wife Jane (perhaps a second wife since there appears to be a twenty year age difference) and five children were in McHenry County, Illinois for the 1850 census and in Walworth County Wisconsin in 1860. There is some confusion about how he spelled his last name since a Frederick Putnam, Jr., purchased land in McHenry County in 1844. Since the first white settler in McHenry County didn't arrived until 1836, there is a possibility that both Fredericks were the same person. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Robert Putnam McHenry, IL
