Can someone tell the parents on these two? And also a list of children?
Hi; Get in touch with the highway dept. just outside of the town of Ohio township. I got an excellent one from them, it shows all the villages and townships for Herkimer CO....... Plus all the cemeteries for the county. You can get the address from the county clerks office, or the historical society. Also the Herkimer Genealogy society. I hope this helps. Vern
Gail, There is a book by Marilyn Penrose called (I think) First Settlers of the Mohawk Valley, published circa 1990 that I have found useful. It is in many libraries. Steve Mabie
Just trying to help! IF, you don't put your surnames in CAPS, then your post might not be read [that is what some viewers in this mad dash world looks for]; then your effort is wasted. Just capitalize the surname in Subjecr and Body; not the Given name. To reach the maximum population, the protocol of CAPITALIZING surnames should be followed; for your insurance. CEE :- ))
I am the Historian of the Town of Fairfield, Herkimer County. I have a copy of the 1790 census. Of course the towns were divided differently then and it would be difficult to verify exactly what present day town a person lived in, in 1790. But a later census might verify a residence in a particular town. Jane Dieffenbacher [email protected]
Hi all, Does anyone have any info on: Joannis Runyen & Helena Johnson (dates unknown) | William Henry Runyen (27sep1831 - ?) GERMAN FLATTS, is the official name of the Town. It includes the villages of Ilion, and Mohawk. The reason for the double "F" must be interesting to learn. r.a.d. -----Original Message----- From: C M Strong <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Saturday, May 29, 1999 5:20 PM Subject: [NYHERKIM-L] Re: HERKIMER COUNTY "OLD" PLACE NAMES > >Hi Martha and all! > >Glad to see you back here, Martha, and so hard at work! Hi Tom, The Barker reference is to Thomas Johnson. He was called Thomas Janson in the baptismal records for his daughters Catherine and Maria Elisabeth. Richard Hayes [email protected]
Hi alll- I agree that Bill Barker's CD is great, I found my Davy line, Spohn's and Mullers on it and some others that I had been looking for. It is well worth the $20. Marion
Tom I show that in Montgomery county it list a Johnson family, 2 generations: starts with Sir William JOhnson b: Warrentown, Ireland 1715. One of his children was Sir John Johnston, b: Johnstown NY 1742 one of his wives was a Clarissa Putman, they had a child by the name James Stephn 1785, killed a Badajoz. Thomas Johnson (Thomas Jansen) b 1769-1770 m Eva..... 1769 Dau Catherine b 1/1769 and Maira Elizabeth 2/1770 There is a little more detail, but this will give you an idea! There are 5 generations of MEBIE's beginning with JAN PIETERSE MEBIE (called just JAN PIETERSZ on 1686 rec.) to ... 4003: JOHN MEBIE (Mabee) - born ca 1763. Hello: Does anyone know if there is a list of knitting factories that would have been in Little Falls, Herkimer county in the early 20th centure? Even better, employee lists? I am researching ancestors who worked in the mills. Have traced them to Little Falls, confimed dates or residency are 1915-1916. Looking for more specifics. Names reseraching: SZELIGA, BONK (BA~K) and BUGAJ all of Poland. Patty [email protected]
Hi Martha and all! Glad to see you back here, Martha, and so hard at work! Still love that Herkimer County page -- it is sooo the best! Anyway, in looking at the "HERKIMER COUNTY PLACE NAMES" page (http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyherkim/hplaces.html), I didn't see the names of "Elizabethtown" and "Spinnetville". I was told some relatives I am seeking might have lived there. Supposedly, the first village is located on a hill "going up the other gorge" out of Ilion (so I guess that means *not* the Frankfort gorge-?) and then Spinnetville is next door. I am posting this to the entire last because I think these two names need more "verification" than the little scrap of family info I found these names scribbled on! :-) I assume if anyone else here has heard ot them, then they can be added to the former German Flatts (?) place names -- right? Now secondly, anyone here know of the residents of Elizabethtown named BROWN? This family was affectionately called "ole hillbilly Browns" by the urbane Ilionites (!) I am particularly interested in TINE BROWN (given name is prolly Valentine; there are a number of NYS Valentine Browns). Tine would've been born about 1875-ish and *possibly* was the second husband of my greataunt Ida. Would love to talk to anyone who might know this family! :-) Thanks! Barker's CDs, I'm told, lists a Johnson family for Montgomery County (which I believe is covered by this list even though the list title doesn't say so). Can anyone tell me if it involves either a James or a Thomas Johnson? Thanks. Tom Johnston [email protected]
Sorry folks I meant this message to be personal to Marsha, did not mean to send it to the list. Must have hit the wrong key. Claire Jury Cranford
Marsha, I guess it was the "main Drag" .If you came off the old Rte 8 and went down the hill over the railroad tracks and then started back up the hill again ,on the right there was a stream with a small bridge, On that stream was an Old mill with a water wheel. next was the coal company and then my Dads house, then the hill starts upward and when I was small late 1930s, there was a market? any way the y killed some pigs there and I saw it and it grossed me out to see how they were killed. My mother was mad at me for going up there. Across from the coal company sitting down off the road was a barn and a stand of spruce trees and then a little way up on the hill was a big old white house. Big to me back then. Two old ladies lived there. lI was so hoping that someone might have a picture or a bill of sale or something that they would share with me of the Sauquoit Coal Co. My brother said my dad had a" Sauquoit Valley Tool service " in the old mill for a short time. Then he left to go to Griffith AB during the war. I was born in Clayville in 1934. My widowed Grandfather married a women called Addie Kincade in 1940, short lived she wiped out his bank accounts and took off. My Uncle Bill lived in my Dads old house next to the coal co. He married Grace Brown and died in Cassville in 1991.. My Dad Fred Jury married Julia Swift in 1925 and they had me and four boys. The new Route 8 runs through where this all was and when I went home last summer was so disappointed as I wanted to show my daughter where her great grandfather had lived. My Grandfather died at our home in Floyd at my Dads house in 1948. But he still lived at the coal co in an apartment upstairs., but my Dad had brought him to our house as he complained of chest pains. Well hope maybe you can fill me in on some stories and If not it was so good to hear from someone, "from home'" Thanks again for writing to me , hope we can connect on something. Hi Claire and Martha and all that might care about good ole Sauquoit, NY! Martha is exactly right of course; sometimes I have seen the same thing happen for Clayville, NY -- some records have ended up on Herkimer County pages/directories. I would be interested in talking to you more about your JURY family in Sauquoit, Claire. That is my home town, and my mother would have been living there at the time of the Jury coal business. Do you know what area of town (like there are so many to chose from *LOL*!) the business was located in?? Marsha Strong
Pardon my mid-Western error in usage. Sauquoit is a village, in the town of Paris, close to the border of Litchfield. The 1867 directories are interesting in that for some persons they state a post office address in parentheses signifying that they did not reside where their mail was delivered. Sauquoit is a town in Oneida County. So your grandfather resided in Litchfield but his post office was in Sauquoit. I would assume that he lived quite close to the border.
