GUNDERMAN ("Countryman"), born abt 1765 and wife MARY. I'm thinking *maybe* Mary might be found in one of your books as there is a kind of "famous" story about her in that she was captured by the Mohawk Indians in the raids around the time of the French-and-Indian War, but she had once befriended the noted Mohawk chief, Joseph Brandt in some way (either gave him cookies or let him sleep in her barn, accounts differ) so he saw her and let her go. Anyway, Adam F. and MARY COUNTRYMAN have a daughter Rebecca who marries ADAM NESTLE and they have a son SOLOMON NESTLE who married LUCINDA PHIILIPS. So those are my three Palatine surnames: COUNTRYMAN, NESTLE, and PHILLIPS. If you can find any of these people, I would very mcuh appreciate it! :-) Marsha Strong Gainesville, FL
Hello All, The correct URL for KINSHIP is www.kinshipny.com Richard Hayes [email protected]
I just realized that I have a copy of Palatines Along The Mohawk: Their Church In The Wilderness, by Ada L.F. Snell. Copyright 1948, reprinted in 1960. Another book that is available for purchase at the Little Falls Historical Society, is Distant Drums: Herkimer County, New York in the War of the Rebellion, by David P. Krutz, copyright 1997. Published by North Country Books, Utica, NY. I have a copy of this book and the first, and would be willing to check them for specific names if requested. Helen Burwell [email protected]
I have a copy of "Genealogy of the Mohawk Valley Bellingers and Alloied Families" by Lyle Frederick Bellinger. Your family appears to be included, but you should check it out for yourself. This is what it says on p 28 under Individual # 61 "Catharina Bellinger, born 22 May, 1726, died 21 January, 1812 age 85 years, 8 months. (Fort Plain church record) Married 3 Marcus Countryman born 21 October, 1720, died 13 January 1793. Fort Plain church. He was second son of Conrad. (See Countryman genealogy.)" It then states that there were 13 Countryman children, but seems to only list four. There is additional information as well. This book can be obtained through the Herkimer County Historical Society for a modest price. (abt. $30.00). Let me know if you'd like additional information. I also have Bellingers, and I believe a possible Countryman connection. Carol in Calif [email protected] C M Strong wrote: > I have noticed a couple of references to the name > BELLINGER. Hi Herkimer Co. List and especially Richard Hayes--What a great list of where to find information! Thanks! And may I suggest that anyone looking for the references mentioned, also check with Hopefarms Press (here's the url: http://www.hopefarm.com/) a truly wonderful online bookstore with great genealogy NY references, or go visit it in person in Saugerties, NY, where I believe it operates under the name of Booktrader II. I've used it both online and in person when I have the pleasure of visiting New York state. Regards, Marilyn Hough Stern, writing to you from an unbelievably cool ( 78 degrees) Austin, TX.
Wow! Thank you.
O mi gawsh, whatta great way to mention BELLINGERS ! More common than Smith, or Johnson in the Mohawk Valley. I think more BELLINGERS in the Tryon Militia in the Revolution than any other surname. There is a book BELLINGER genealogy published by the Herkimer County Historical Society that is very handy for genealogists. randy. -----Original Message----- From: C M Strong <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Sunday, June 13, 1999 5:53 AM Subject: [NYHERKIM-L] BELLINGER >I have noticed a couple of references to the name >BELLINGER. These are my surnames. Mostly around the Towns of Herkimer, Ilion, Mohawk. There are EDWARDS and more than likely BARGER still living in the area even today. It's a wild guess on my part, but I believe most of these families migrated to Herkimer County around the mid-late to late 1800s and as I said earlier, some of these families still live in the area to this very day. Good luck to us all and happy hunting. Barbara and grandson Lawrence, Our little Tornado. Proud sponsor of Rootsweb.

Check out our children's story "Adam Helmer's Run", accessible from the bottom of our front page in the Meet Your Ancestors section. This was put on line back in December 1998. At the end of the article is a link to the Helmer Cemetery, where Adam is buried, on the Cayuga County GenWeb site. Elsewhere on the Cayuga County page should be information about plans by the Cayuga County Town of Brutus and Village of Weedsport to honor Adam in the future. As I catch up with other work on the Herkimer/Montgomery site I'll be adding more information about Adam's descendants, as well as his Revolutionary War pension record. We need a volunteer who's good with old handwriting to transcribe the pension record. Target date for uploading the Helmer info is August 1999. I have noticed a couple of references to the name BELLINGER. Apparetnly this is a name of some historic significance in the Mohawk Valley at the time of the Revloution -- does anyone know more?? My one BELLINGER is Catherine, who married Marcus Countryman about 1750. Anyone have her in their line? Thanks! Marsha
