Hi List: I have just found that Mary ANDERSON SEAVEY, wife of Robert SEAVEY, of Ilion, NY, died October 13, 1976 in the Mohawk Valley General Hospital at Ilion, NY and was buried in the Armory Hill Cemetery in Ilion. Would someone be able to advise where this Armory Hill Cemetery is located and to whom I could contact for more information? Her marriage to Robert Seavey which was in 1948 was a second marriage for Mary Anderson Seavey. Robert Seavey died July 23, 1980 and is buried by himself in the North Columbia Cemetery in Ilion. I did visit this cemetery site in June when I was in New York. It would appear that Mary might have been buried with her first husband in this Armory Hill Cemetery. I have no name of this first husband. Any help with this information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Eleanor Sevey Goodrich Florida
Cheryl, All (or most) counties in the state of New York are divided into Towns. The Town contain the cities, villages (formal political organizations), and various wide spots in the road regarded as hamlets. Warren, Russia, Columbia, Herkimer, and Manheim are Towns. I find: BULLOCK, MARY, (ca. 1783 - 14 Aug 1842) w/o Jacob. buried in the Town of Russia. The usual migration sequence from Herkimer County (in 1820s) was Oneida, Lewis and Jefferson County not Lewis and Oneida County. This is because the Town of Poland abuts the Town of Remsen, Barneveld, Prospect, Trenton, Oneida County. Of course, this is mentioned as another possibility. If you haven't explored the Mormon Church records, this might give you some clues. Their resources are awesome but of various degrees of quality. Nevertheless, you might try this resource. Their website is http://www.familysearch.com Their Family History Centers are usually better to use because they are more efficient, are better organized for the researcher, and you can copy copious records via computer in a very short time. If you don't know how to find such a place, let me know. randy p.s. If you want a good map, here is one that might help. "Central Leatherstocking Region of New York", Map Works/Good Beginnings, Inc. 2125 Buffalo Road, Rochester, NY 14624, 1-800--822.MAPS Covers 9 counties. The cost is about $4. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Cahaas2@aol.com> To: <NYHERKIM-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 02, 2001 5:36 AM Subject: [NYHERKIM] Re: Shaw in Herkimer Co. > I'm sorry I didn't offer enough information before. I'm sorry I didn't offer enough information before. Maria SHAW married, about 1821, Enos LASHUA, b. about 1795 in Quebec, Canada. They were in Herkimer Co., married, in the 1825 state census. They had four daughters, all born in Herkimer County: Jane, b. abt. 1822, m. William H. ROWBOTHAM; Emaline C. (my ancestor), b. abt. 1824, m. Ebenezer BULLOCK; Sarah, b. abt. 1832, m. Anson PARROTT; and Amanda b. abt. 1836, m. Frank JACKSON. The family moved, about 1849 to Leyden, Lewis Co., NY and eventually to Oneida County. I found 12 Sahw families listed in the 1825 Herkimer Co. state census and was hoping to find someone who had more information on them so I can determine which might be Maria's family. None were listed in Salisbury where Maria and Enos were living. Not being familiar with Herkimer Co. I don't know which town might be close by. There were Shaw families in Warren, Russia, Columbia, Herkimer, and Manheim. Thanks for any help you can give. Cheryl

Dear List ~ I am researching my EYCHANER surname and have documented my ancestors from CONRAD EIGHENEUR & ANNA SPOON > CONRADT JOHN EYCHANER & CATHARINE BOODY. Their son, HENRY EYCHANER m. I'm searching for the family of HORACE CADWELL and his wife Catherine. Horace died in Herkimer Co in 1813, and Catherine remarried Samuel Merry. They had 3 children, Lucy, Horace Jr and Aaron. Hello list, Is there anyone out there who is researching the surnames RUSSEL (RUSSELL) or SECKNER in Herkimer County? My ancestor Jonathan W. Russel was born in about 1796 in Vermont. He enlisted in the War of 1812 at Schoharie Town, Schoharie County, NY. I do not have proof as to who his parents are yet. In 1822, Jonathan W. Russel married Elizabeth Seckner in Little Falls, Herkimer County. I suspect that Jonathan lived in Herkimer County between 1815 and 1825. Perhaps in Little Falls or a nearby town. The Seckner family was settled in Herkimer County. They probably lived in Little Falls or German Flats. My ancestor Elizabeth Seckner (Secknor) was born on July 12, 1806. I believe that her father may have been a John Seckner. I do know that several families of Seckners lived in Herkimer County during this period. I am trying to find Elizabeth's parents. Any help provided on the RUSSEL or SECKNER lines would certainly be appreciate. I am willing to share information with others who may be interested in these lines. Nick Mizaur nmizaur@tgmp5.hbs.edu
This is my first visit to the Herkimer county list. My ggrandmother was Marietta Whaley. She was the daughter of Austin Whaley. Marietta was born in Herkimer county Oct., 18, 1864. I believe it was in West Winfield, N.Y. She married a Swedish immigrant, Albert Sampson. In Jan., 1888, they had their first and only child, Claude Clarence Sampson, born in Limestone/Killbuck, N.Y. Does the Whaley surname sound familiar to anyone on the list? I'm especially interested in trying to find information on my ggrandfather, Albert....where in Sweden did he come from...was there other Sampson family with him when he immigrated...is there "other" Whaley family in Herkimer county that would be interested in sharing information? Thank you. Sharon in Mn.

Its not a matter of the "supposed" NA connection being untrue, just that they are hard to prove sometimes using the standard sources. The same goes for research on African Americans. In a recent project on African Americans in Cazenovia I found that two were actually Indian and two others who were black, and in many records, were never mentioned as such except in a reminiscense nearly 80 years after they left town! While I may agree with that statement in come cases (for my grandfather was supposed to be part Mohawk but we could only find red-headed Irish) Native Americans usually ended up in the historical record no differently than any one else - unless mention of ethnicity or race was a particular point of the record. Often mention of race was a disadvantage (imagine that!) and not it was not mentioned except in closed circles such as personal reminiscences or perhaps offical records such as court and surrogates records. Census records and some official records specifically noted ethnicity so that would be a great place to start - and often, if someone was only a small part Indian or black they were noted as Indian or Black. In the state of Virginia there was no designation of Indian and all Indians were officially to be called Black, even up to a few years ago. If the ancestor lived on a federal reservation then there are federal census records specifically for those places, and many of these can be found on-line as tracing ancestry is important to Indian nations bolstering their strength and finding individuals who could trace their ancestry to them. The Federal and State governments left wonderful paper trails documenting the destruction and dispersal of Indian nations, so there is plenty of material to work with. Very well said, Dan. And this applies to other kinds of research, too. My husband was born in El Paso, Texas--an American his whole life! He called himself a Mexican, and his family spoke Mexican and English in their home when he was growing up. His actual blood was Apache. There are some Apache records attached to Fort Hancock, but in doing family research it was necessary to go through U.S. Census records. And another thing, a mistake I made when I was first looking for my ancestors was to immediately eliminate the Shaws who were Germans or Irish, because I thought I knew my family was Scottish. Then I found that the Scots didn't all come directly from Scotland to the US, but moved about and lived a few years in one country or another, making their "country of origin" on record something other than Scotland. In my opinion, you should take the "supposed" Native American connection with a grain of salt and proceed with your research in standard genealogical sources until you find actual evidence, otherwise you risk wasting a lot of time on a wild goose chase since the majority of these traditions turn out to be untrue. ----- Original Message ----- From: <saare@attglobal.net> To: <NYHERKIM-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 18, 2001 9:12 AM Subject: [NYHERKIM] Re Native American research > Hi, > I'm new to Native American research. Hi, I'm new to Native American research. I'm looking for the parents of Charles Lamb whose mother supposedly was a Mohawk. Son Charles Lamb was born about 1872. Charles was living in the town of Mohawk about 1891 where he had a son Ralph with Cora Walrath of Little Falls. How would I locate someone of N-A ancestry? Would the mother be listed in the census as Indian heritage? Would she have been on a reservation? Are reservations in the census? Any leads appreciated. Thank you and happy hunting. Elsie

Joel, During your research, did you run across any info on the Perkins family? M y family moved to central NY just after the Revolution. In the era of 1890-1900, MY grandfather lived on Frankfort hill. This is between Ilion and Utica in Herkimer county. His name is Ezra Alva Perkins. I'm not sure the New York records will show a middle name of Alva, he used it after moving to New Bern, N.C. He was raised by someone other than his parents.
