    3. Dear Shelley Fox and List: There were 388 taxpayers on the October 23, 1779 Schenectady District Tax List for Albany County, NY. (Summary of the 1779 Albany County Tax returns prepared by John N. Bleecker, Albany County Treasurer, New York State Library call number: KT 13324, GY Lansing Papers, Box 1 file 2) The Second Regiment of the Albany County Militia was raised from the Schenectady Tax District of Albany County, NY. According to New York in the Revolution as Colony and State compiled by James Roberts, 903 men served in the Second Regiment during the entire course of the Revolution. Roberts was the Comptroller of New York State and compiled a list of names for each Regiment based on pay records. So 903 is probably a slightly inflated number because he recorded each variation of spelling of each name as though it represented a separate person. So I shall let you figure out the percentages. I do not know enough about the population of the Schenectady District to even hazard a guess. If you wanted to know about the population of the Saratoga Tax District I might be able to be of more help to you. If you want a more comprehensive picture of Albany County, I bequeath you the following trivia. Albany County Summary page for 1779 Tax Lists From the Records of John N. I have found that an ancestor in Western Massachusetts served in the Revolutionary War as a guard in Vermont for 2 3 month terms, I also found an ancestor who eventually resided in Greene County served in the War in Connecticut for the period of the war, but I have not been able to determine if the ancestor who resided in Schenectady during the Revolutionary war ever served. Can anyone tell me what percentage of males served in the war? And is it possible that none of the males in a family from Schenectady area ever served in the revolutionary war. > > Thanks > > Shelley Fox > > > Shelley Fox > shelley.fox@earthlink.net > Why Wait?
