These census records have now been transferred to the new county office building at 411 Main Street, Catskill, NY. Greene Co NY Censuses William Dollarhide Mon, Jun 14, 2004 If you have ancestors who lived in Greene County, New York between 1830 and 1880, you probably have seen the federal censuses. This is a unique county in America for censuses, there are original sets of the federal censuses still sitting in the courthouse, in addition to the federal copies available on microfilm. It was the federal copies that were microfilmed by the National Archives. For all counties, the original copy remained in the courthouse. But finding these originals is difficult for most counties — they are few and far between because the locals never had any incentive to save them. Many New York counties did save their originals, and Greene County is a good example. As a review of New York State Censuses & Substitutes, here is what you can expect for Greene County: 1830-1880 Federal Censuses (County Copies), Greene County, New York. These are the original federal censuses, retained in the County Clerk's office, Catskill, New York. Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1966. (Hand copies of the original census books were made here – a copy sent to Washington, DC, where the copy, not the original, was eventually microfilmed by the National Archives). Comparisons should be made between the county's original copy and the federal copy, because transcription errors were common, particularly for spelling errors.
