Always interested in networking with descendants, collaterals, or spousal families to fill in blanks. No Howland of whom I'm aware is in my direct ancestry. However: Elizabeth Mary Howland (1812-1903) married John Van Wie (1808-1873) in Greene Co, and I believe both spouses were also born in Greene Co. John's father was John Van Wie (1787-1853) who married Elizabeth Spoor. This John was a younger brother of my great-great-great grandfather Andrew Van Wie (1774-1826). Both were sons of a two-VW marriage, (Capt) John A. Van Wie (1747-1797) & Alida Van Wie (b. abt 1750 d. 1843) of Albany County. A priority now on my research agenda is descendants of Capt. John A. & Alida (Van Wie) Van Wie, and geography of moves within & beyond Albany County. Within this, Greene County-related questions of interest include: 1. Learn about the BERGAMINI who married Eliz (Spoor) & John VW's daughter Malinda/Linda (1854-1936), and descendants. At 1900 census Malinda appears w/three Bergamini sons. She is husbandless but marked as married, on Warren Street in Athens in household w/sisters Anna Van Wie (head, single) and Jennie Van Hoesen (marked married but also no husband in household). Per 1900 census, Malinda's son Willie Bergamini was b. June 1886 in Italy, John Bergamini b. Aug 1887 in NY, and Herbert M. Bergamini b. Nov 1889. Your online records for Athens Rural cemetery show Malinda buried there, but no husband. Also Herbert Bergamini (Col. US Army WWI & WWII; Ashes) & wife; plus an Elizabeth Howland Bergamini (1892-1897). Meanwhile other "spot" research tells me John Van Wie Bergamini became an architect, known especially during the first half of the 20th century for church and university buildings in East Asia including China, Japan (Tokyo Union Church) and the Philippines. Intriguing, all of this, and I'd love to know more! 2. Find church and/or other documentation, plus more reliable clues, to untangle conflicting accounts of WHICH "Helena VAN WIE" married Jacob HALLENBECK (HOLLENBECK) and clarify migration (reportedly about 1817) to Indiana (where they used the Hollenbeck form of name), descendants, etc. a. Alida (Van Wie) & John A. Van Wie had a daughter Helena Van Wie, born 17 Aug 1771 & baptized at Albany DRC, 25 Aug 1771. a. Catharina (Lansing) & Gerett Van Wie (brother of Alida VW, above) had a daughter Helena Van Wie, baptized at Albany DRC, 27 July 1772. Each of these Helena VW's is claimed, in different genealogies, to marry "Jacob Hallenbeck" (or Hollenbeck) who died in Scott County, Indiana 14 Oct 1842. His widow, whose given/nickname varies across accounts, appears as late as 1860 census in Scott Co, living w/a daughter. Marriage date is variously approximated 1791-1793-1800. Marriage location sometimes given as New Salem, Albany Co, NY. Sometimes Jacob's parents are identified as Mareytie Van Buskirk & Jan Jacobse Hallenbeck, and his birth or christening as 16 Dec 1770 in Greene Co. Lists of children vary depending on the source in number, birth dates & locations. Documentation or other good leads welcome.
