    3. Martha, I'm interested in your Tyler/Hotchkiss connection. My 4th great-grandmother was Abigail Tyler (m. Israel Hues/Huse), who lived in Durham. I've been trying to prove her connection to Tyler ancestors for several years. Her husband died abt 1812 and she remained a widow until she died, about 40 years later. My research notes are copied below, if you are interested. "Abigail (TYLER) Hues died 30 Sep 1852, according to cemetery records, and is buried in Stonebridge Cemetery in East Durham, with her probable brother Phineas Tyler, Jr., his son Jehiel, and a Capt. James Tyler. Although I have not found a birth record for Abigail, I have conferred with Jane Bouley, the town historian of Branford, New Haven Co, CT and presented my circumstantial evidence to her. I have also communicated with a Harrison family historian who is writing a book dealing especially with "Harrison women". Both of them agree with me that Abigail is almost certainly the daughter of Phinehas Tyler, of Goshen, Litchfield Co and Branford, New Haven Co CT, who removed to Durham with brothers Elisha and David, and father David, Sr. about 1784-1786. "Phinehas Tyler's wife was Abigail HARRISON, the daughter of John and Desire (FARRINGTON) Harrison. Abigail Tyler's dob, about Sept 1773, would fit in with other children of Phinehas and Abigail Tyler. It's also logical that Abigail would be named for her mother and would name a daughter after her grandmother, Desire Farrington Harrison. Abigail's son Ira named one of his sons Harrison Tyler Hues. I am very thankful to both of the above-mentioned Branford historians for the detailed genealogies they provided to me, with documentation, for Abigail's ancestors. "My circumstantial evidences are outlined below. Further discussion or comments are welcome. 1. Her son Ira named a son Harrison Tyler Hues. Abigail Tyler's mother was Abigail Harrison. 2. Abigail is buried in the Stone Bridge Cemetery plot with her probable brother Phineas, Jr. and his son Jehiel. 3. Abigail is of the right age to be a daughter of Phineas, Sr. 4. Elisha Tyler (possibly her uncle) lived in the next household to Isreal Hues' probable father, Bodwell Huse, in the 1790 census for Freehold, Albany Co NY. 5. Phinehas, Sr's son Jacob had sons named Calvin and Miles. A Calvin and a Miles Tyler witnessed a deed drawn up for Ira Huse (son of Abigail). If Jacob was Abigail's brother, then Calvin and Miles Tyler were first cousins to Ira. Ira's move to Geauga Co, OH in about 1834-35 may have been connected to Jacob's move there, which took place about 1835. 6. Two of Abigail's sons, Ira and Josiah, are mentioned in Phineas Tyler Jr's will which is about 100 pages long." The information below has also made me curious about whether there is a blood-tie between my Huse/Tyler families and a Hotchkiss family. I also have a different family line with Hotchkiss connection at an earlier time in Cheshire, New Haven Co CT. From Western New York Land Transactions, 1804-1824 by Karen E.Livsey copyright 1991 Genealogical Publishing Company, Library of Congress Catalogue Number 90-85226 (pages 182-183): Miles Hotchkiss - 7 Apr 1817, Lot 40 Sect 00 Twp 03 Range 12, D-O Ref-Pg=495-0044 Ira Hues - 10 Apr 1817, purchased the rest of this lot (is this Ira of East Durham NY?) William Howell 2nd - 24 Apr 1817, Lot 21 Sect 00 Twp 15 Range 09, D-O Ref-Pg=495-0041 John Brown - 4 Oct 1817, purchased the rest of this lot - see pg 0042 (is he also a cousin?) Ira Huse's father had a sister Rebekah who m. Thomas Howell. Their son, William Thomas Howell, was b. 11 Feb 1788. He and Ira Hues, both of Durham, were 1st cousins. Ira's father also had a sister Anna who m. Samuel Brown. I don't find a son named John in listing of their children, so not sure what connection is to this John Brown, if any. A Samuel Hotchkiss lived 2 doors away from Bodwell Huse (Ira's probable grandfather) in the 1790 census. Miles Hotchkiss (who is his father?) appears in the 1820 Census in Chatauqua Co, but Ira Huse does not. If this Ira is the man who was my 3rd great-grandfather, he obviously did not stay there, and perhaps never lived there at all, only buying the land on speculation. He was back in Durham, Greene Co in 1830 (spelled "Hughs"), then removed to Geauga Co OH abt 1834/35. Wondering how, or if, Hotchkiss family from Durham NY is related to Huse/Tyler families. Abigail Tyler and Israel Hues ("Hewis") were m. in Greenville Presbyterian Church 1792 (record on Sylvia's website). There are four other Tylers whose marriages are transcribed from church records on the website: 7 Nov 1790 - Josiah Woodward and Jane Tyler, both of Freehold 27 Feb 1792 - Timothy Tyler 2nd and Cynthia Peck, both of Freehold 2 Jan 1794 - Hezekiah Tyler and Abigail Brownson, both of Freehold 23 Feb 1801 - Joseph Jewell, Jr. and Desire Tyler, both of Durham (town formed from a part of Freehold in 1800). Do you have any information about them? Please let me know if any of these names sound familiar. If you can supply more detail about your own connections, I may be able to help. I've been working with these family names for a long time and have lots of additional notes. Thanks!
