I have a question for the list: where do you keep all your deeds, wills, and vital records? I was thinking of copying them and putting the originals in a safe deposit box. With all the money we all have tied up in these things, I'd rather be safe than sorry. Any ideas would be most welcome. Thanks. My lawyer also has a copy of wills, powers of attorney, etc. In Maryland, the state does not seal your safe deposit box upon death. I have put my daughter on the list to access the box. If you live in a state that seals the box upon your death, this is not a good idea. Ralph Strong Glen Burnie, MD
You don't want to put anything in a safe deposit box that your family might need to settle your estate. As soon as the bank knows someone has died they lock out everyone and sometimes it takes years for heirs to get the box unlocked. Your will needs to be in your home. I keep mine in a fireproof box with my deeds, life insurance policies, etc. A friend of mine also keeps a copy taped to the wall next to his washing machine. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barbara Craddock" <goldbabe@tampabay.rr.com> To: <NYGREENE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 28, 2005 7:55 PM Subject: [GREENE COUNTY] question > I have a question for the list: where do you keep all your deeds, wills, and > vital records? Thing to do is let your executer know where you keep the key and give them access to the box.
