Be sure, be sure, be sure to check the land records. Sometimes people do not transfer title for several generations, they just keep paying the taxes. (Yes, this does happen modernly, also) I was looking for a probate and eventually found a beautiful partition record - where the court partitioned the land between the various heirs, with a nice map and lots of excellent genealogical data.
