    3. Hi Dick, My gggrandmother was Lois Groat (b. abt 1841) , who married Lauren Alonzo Matthews (b. 1837) on 4/25/1855 per family records. I have seen the grave and the marker, which is an obelisk with Lauren on one side, Lois on another side and his second wife on the third side. Lois died at age 20, shortly after giving birth to her only child. What I noted was that she died 8/19/18?? at age 20. Her name is so worn that I thought it was Grant at first, but the family bible cleared that up for me. She and Lauren had one daughter, Fanny (b. 8/5/1860), who became my ggrandmother. Lauren Alonzo served in the Civil War. The burial site is in the Pleasant Valley Cemetary in Ashland, Greene County, New York. I also found listed in Ashland, Greene county, NY: Groat, John farmer, 76 b.Columbia county, Mercy (wife) 71 born CT. ch: Watson farmer 30 b.Greene , Lois 15 born Greene. We might have a connection to your Margaret, as I have not been able to get further back with this family. I have that John was born abt. 1774 in Columbia Co., NY. He and Mercy are buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Ashland, Greene Co., NY. She was born abt. 1779 and came from Connecticut. I have that there were 4 sons, J. Watson(1826) , Hirum (1825), Watson (1827) and John Groat, Jr. (1832). And, I wonder if Lois was actually a grandaughter that they were raising due to the difference in her age and that of the "brothers". I found the following Groats in my Tombstone Project research: John Groat (wife Mercy) d. 10/25/1863, aged 83y and buried in Mountain Valley Cemetery in the town of Ashland, Greene Co. NY. J. Watson Groat d. 5/10/1903, aged 77y buried with John (above) Cordelia Groat w/o Clark Kurau, b. 11/29/1830, d. 1/2/1897 and buried in West Settlement Cemetary, town of Jewett, Greene Co. NY Harriet H. Groat w/o David E. Abeel, b. 1/26/1848, d. 10/22/1878 and buried in SAile Abeel Cemetery in Catskill, Greene Co., NY Maria Groat, d. 4/18/1815, w/o Robert I. Van Den Bergh and buried in Reed Cemetery, Coxsackie, Greene Co., NY Edwin Groat, d. 7/29/1857, aged 17y, s/o Stephen G. Groat and Jula A. Tompkins and buried in Reed (above) Stephen Groat, b. about 1809 in New York, is being searched on RootsWeb, but his wife was Rhonda Comstock and the 1840 census shows they had 2 sons and 2 daughters together, so it does not appear to be the same Stephen Groat who was the father of Edwin, since Edwin would have been born about 1840. The timing looks too tight for a second marriage. I don't know if this will make some useful connection, but wanted to share this information with you first. Hopefully, we may help each other trace these Groat roots. I do have other census information, etc.; but, this has been a hard track to follow for me. I hope to discover more information when I visit Greene County in August. Mignon Matthews Clementon, NJ "Nothing is so strong as gentleness; nothing so gentle as real strength." 3. Thanks for your email. In addition to the information you sent, I found the following posted on the Greene County website by Joyce Riedinger: "HENRY GROAT, a prominent merchant of Delhi, was born at Prattsville, Greene County, N.Y., February 15, 1869, a son of John and Catherine (Gilbert) Groat. His grandfather, John A. Groat, was a native of Dutchess County, and a prominent farmer. He afterward moved to Greene County, and purchased a farm there. His son John remained on the farm, assisting his father until 1861, when he enlisted in the Fifteenth New York Heavy Artillery, and served with distinction until the war was nearly over, being discharged on account of disability from wounds received in action. He resided for a time in Greene, county, but afterward moved to Gilboa, of which place he is still a resident. He married Miss Catherine Gilbert, daughter of William M. Gilbert, a prominent foundryman of Greene County; and two children were born to them-Henry and Charles." This information seems to fit with the information you sent. You reference John GROAT twice in your email: 1) "I have that John was born abt. 1774 in Columbia Co., NY"; 2) "John GROAT (wife Mercy) d. 10/25/1863, aged 83y and buried in Mountain Valley Cemetery in the town of Ashland, Greene Co. NY". It appears that you have two different birth dates for the same John, 1774 & 1780. However, it appears that your John GROAT is the same as the grandfather, John A. GROAT referred to above. If this is true, then it appears that the "John Groat, Jr. (1832)" you refer to is the husband of Catherine (Gilbert) GROAT and the father of Henry and Charles GROAT. If John GROAT Sr. was born in 1774, he could have been the father of my Margaret GROAT--he would have been 20 when Margaret was born c1794; if he was born in 1780, he possible was Margaret's brother. The fact that they were born in different counties, Columbia & Greene, 14 years apart is certainly possible. Dick .
