    3. Hi Sylvia, I have been thinking about which line I want most to trace, so my answer to this was delayed. There are more....... I have made no progress with Salina (Hosford) Matthews, except to get a copy of her obit. I have not even been able to get that for John Albert Matthews (her husband). John A. was born 8/13/1803, possibly in Columbia Co., and died 3/14/1855 in Ashland, Greene Co. I don't know where they are buried. I know their decendents, but want to find their parents and line of decent. I know that the odds of locating a birth certificate are slim, but is there anything at the Vedder that might shed some light on John's ancestors? Also, his son, Lauren Alonzo, married Lois Groat on 4/25/1855. They also lived in Ashland. Lois' Head of Household was John Groat and his wife was Mercy (Unknown surname). I did not say her parents, because of their ages; although, she is listed as their daughter. John Groat was born abt. 1774 and died 1863. He is said to have come from Columbia County, as with John A. They lived near each other in Ashland and their "children" married, so perhaps they came from Columbia County together. Mercy Groat was born abt. 1779 and came from Connecticut. They are both buried in the Mountain View Cemetery in Ashland. Lois was born abt. 1841 and died 8/19/1860. Her only child was born 8/15/1860. She is buried with Lauren Alonzo and his second wife, Mary Elizabeth Tompkins, in Pleasant Valley. Lauren A. has a Civil War marker by his obelisk. I want to find out who John Groat's father was and search out that line of descent; also, who was Mercy? What was her surname and who are her parents? You may guess that I am interested in the mystery of Lois parentage. She may have been the daughter of a deceased daughter or son; or, she may have been adopted for some other reason. I just don't think that she is likely the daughter of a 62 year old woman. Maybe a will for John Groat? What about land records? I probably gave you more background than you need (or want), but I am asking for your expertise as well as your help in searching. I am learning, but not experienced. Thanks!
