    2. The Hitchcocks who settled in Ashland are only distantly related to the ones who settled in Windham (Big Hollow). You have to go back to Matthias Hitchcock, who came to this country in 1635, to find the common ancestor of these two Greene County branches. According to "The Genealogy of the Hitchcock Family Who Are Descended from Matthias Hitchcock of East Haven, Conn., and Luke Hitchcock of Wethersfield, Conn.," by Mrs. Edward Hitchcock, Sr., 1894: Ashland branch Jacob 5 Hitchcock (Caleb 4, Nathaniel 3, Nathaniel 2, Matthias 1) son of Caleb & Isabel (Goodsell) Hitchcock b. 4 Jul 1739 in North Haven, CT m. 9 Oct 1760 to Phebe Ives moved to West Springfield, MA in 1787 moved to Windham, NY in 1792 d. 1810 in Windham 9 children: Abigail, Enoch, Jacob, Phebe, Beda, Abigail, Jacob, Caleb, John Big Hollow branch Dea.
