Hi Audrey - need your expertise regarding the ME Church. A Melvin H. Merchant in Cornwallville, whom I am researching, was called a Rev. in the 1902 Catskill paper when he stepped in to preach for a Rev. who was on vacation. I see from the Cornwallville ME records that Merchant was actively involved in the church. Would he have to be ordained to preach or to bear the title Rev.? I have never seen him referred to as a Rev. other than in this one newspaper article. He actually was a farmer and then a merchant in his later years. Sylvia
