    1. Re: [NYGREENE] Greene County famous sons (and daughters)
    2. Sylvia, you asked about a biography of Maggie Newton Van Cott. The Vedder probably has this eleven page pamphlet: "Maggie Newton Van Cott First Woman Licensed to Preach in the Methodist Episcopal Church," by William R. Phinney, published by the Commission on Archives and History, New York Annual Conference, United Methodist Church, 1969. I had forgotten that she also invented some patent medicines. Bishop Daniel Sylvester Tuttle (1837-1923) - born in Windham, Episcopal Missionary Bishop of Montana with jurisdiction in Idaho and Utah, later Bishop of Missouri Rev. Daniel Steele (1824-1914) - born in Windham, first President of Syracuse University Blossom Dearie (1926-2009) - jazz singer, born in East Durham, died last weekend http://www.legacy.com/TimesUnion-Albany/Obituaries.asp?Page=Lifestory& PersonID=123975648 Thomas Cole (1801-1848) - artist, founder of the Hudson River School of landscape painting. Although he was born in England, he has certainly brought fame and tourism to this county. Candace (Thurber) Wheeler (1827-1923), who was born in Delaware County, NY, was associated with Louis Comfort Tiffany. She had a home in Onteora Park. In fact, she and her brother were responsible for creating this colony for artists and writers. Her daughter, Dora (Wheeler) Keith (1856-1940), was an artist and illustrator. Another daughter, Candace T. Wheeler (1845-1876), married Dr. Lewis Atterbury Stimson (1844-1918). They were the parents of Henry Lewis Stimson (1867-1950) who was US Secretary of War 1911-1913 during Taft's presidency, and from 1940-1945 under FDR. He also served as US Secretary of State 1929-1933 during the Hoover administration. Googling any of these women will produce thousands of hits. Author Mary Mapes Dodge (1831-1905) also owned a home in Onteora Park. Her best known work was "Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates." She was also the editor of St. Nicholas Magazine for children. Stage actress Maude Adams (1872-1953), another resident of Onteora Park, died in Tannersville. She was famous for performing in plays of James M. Barrie such as the Little Minister and Peter Pan. The Mountain Top Historical Society in Haines Falls probably has more information on these women.
