According to the History of Green County by J. B. Beers, Mathys Houghtaling received a Patent in or near the village of Coxsackie in about 1697. From other information I have found that Mathys Houghtaling lived in Beverwyk or (sp. Beaverwyk) before coming to Coxsackie. He was supposedly living on or near his father-in-law, Hendrick Marsellis. Mathys was brought to New Amsterdam in 1655 as an orphan to work for the DWI Co. I am guessing he first worked as a servant as he was a teenager when he arrived. My question is two fold; Where is Beverwyk? and How long would Mathys of had to work for the DWI Co. before he would be free from bondage? If anyone can help me on either of these, it will help me build a plausible history for my ancestor, "Mathys Houghtaling" Thank you in advance for your assistance. I appreciate it very much.
