In reply to where was Charleston, NY ? in 1700's? Not really sure. in 1860 Charleston, was in Montgomery Co. Montgomery Co quite large in 1790 and was formed from Albany Co in 1772. In 1790 Montgomery Co included all or part of the following present day counties: starting at the north and west to each they are: -St Lawrence, Franklin; Jefferson, Lewis, Herkimer Hamilton, small bit of Essex; Oswego (by Lake Ontario), Oneida, Fulton; part of Wayne, Cayuga; Onondaga, Madison, Otsego, present day Montgomery; Seneca Tompkins, Cortland, Chenango, Otsego, part of Schoharie; Schuyler, Chemung, Tioga, Broome, and part of Delaware. By 1860 counties take the present day boundaries. CHARLESTON - (info from 1860 NY GAZETTEER) - formed from. Mohawhk Mar 12, 1793. Glen & pt of Root taken off in 1823. Most soughter town in county - only one not along the Mohawk river. - on high plateau immediately west of Schoharie Creek. soils good for spring grains & dairying: Villages within Charleston are Burtonsville on Schoharie Creek; Charleston Four Corners in s.w. corner; vill of Charleston ne north border of town. Carytown and Oak Ridge are hamlets. A portion of this town included in atent of 24,500 acres granted to Wm Curry in 1637; and others were portions of the "Stone Heap Patent" granted to John Bowen and others in 1770 and Thomas Machins Patent of 1787. The first settlements were probably made previous to the Revolution. footnote reads: Robt Winchell, Nathan Tracy, Aden Brownley, and Joseph Burhap settled near Kimballs Corners, Abia Beaman near Charlestown P.O. Thomas Machin, Capt. John Stanton, John Eddy, and Ezekiel Tracy were also early settlers.
