Hi Sylvia, Isn't there a story in "History of Greene County" about the Singer Sewing Machine Company? If I remember correctly, the financial brain behind the firm was connected to Greene. If I was going to do the PBS thing I would use the hook of "Boom and Bust" for Greene County. Biggest tannery. gone. Ship building. gone. Bricks. gone. Ice Houses. gone. Mountain Houses. gone. And yet, Greene keeps re-inventing itself. Lots of patents along the way. He is interested in knowing more about Greene County famous sons and daughters. Folks who were inventors, like William Bullock, printing press fame, innovators like Henry Meiggs, who built Chile and Peru's railways, maggie Van Coot, the famous evangelist. Any others you folks know about, that I should add to the list? There was a book written about the Singer who founded the Singer Sewing Machine Company. Isaac Singer was born in Pittstown, Rensselaer County. He was a colorful character. In my research I remember finding Singers in early 1700 records in the Hudson Valley. A patent infringement case concerning the sewing machine was settled in Albany. I don't remember a Greene County connection, but there might have been one. Jim, You have a good memory. I couldn't help looking them up in Rootsweb. Edward C. Clark was Isaac Singer's financial partner. Edward was born 19 Dec 1811 in Athens. His father Nathan Clark was a potter in Athens. Edward married Caroline Jordan who was from Hudson. Edward Clark was one of the developers of the famous apartment building The Dakota in New York City.
