    3. Hi Sylvia, Do you know if they applied to Orange/Rockland Counties?  Soneone told me an ancestor may have gotten Bounty Land there, but I didn't think there was any Bounty Land on the Hudson. These rights pertained to Militia soldiers, which were under the jurisdiction of New York State and as such the State held all records pertaining to their service. Unfortunately, the Capitol fire of 1910 (I think that is the year) destroyed most of those documents. There are a few pieces left, that I have reviewed, but they are mostly receipts for pay. Nonetheless, Greene County was not a county where those "rights" applied. 3. Barbara, I really don't think so. The only land that could be given away by the government was land that was not already owned in some fashion. Orange, Rockland, Ulster, Greene, Albany, Columbia, Dutchess, Westchester, Delaware, Schoharie and more I imagine, were already owned, largely by Patent holders. However, the land in northwestern New York was Indian land, and, I guess, available for white settlers. I have a map in my collection that clearly shows the extent of land owned by the whites around the Revolution, and it clearly shows western New York as Indian land. What may have happened is that your ancestor may have been entitled to land bounty rights up in the far northewest of the state, and didn't want to go up there, so swapped it out with someone who had land in Orange/Rockland counties, who wanted to go. I've seen that alot.
