If you google this - "nicholas tremper" Greene County NY (include the quotes around Nicholas Tremper) you get a few interesting hits - I have no donkey in this race and don't know the family but I know Tremper is an old name from Greene County - and I can see how the two words could be mixed given the way people could or couldn't spell back then.
