I have been checking on the Charles E Haines angle, but still can't come to a conclusion. I've done quite a bit of research on him, as his sister Elisabeth b. 1828 was my GGGrandmother. The wife "Dame" listed in the 1880 census was Diadema Webster. I've been able to locate 3 children but there may be more. They were Martha b. 1851, George Washington b. 1854, and Charles Edgar b. 1857. Another possible child was Edward b. 1869 but I can't verify that. George married Nellie Layman, and Charles married Deborah Layman who was probably her sister. I suspect there could have been another son that I haven't found yet who was Alice's father. From what I found about 10 members of this Haines family, Charles Sr's parents, siblings, etc, all died in a 6 or 7 year period so quite a few Haines households had grandchildren, nieces and nephews living with them. I'll continue trying to connect Alice Jones to Etta, as she sounds like the only connection that could tie this all up. In a message dated 4/6/2011 9:08:31 P.M. On July 8, 1883, "Mrs. Ettie Haines" was married to Mazeppa Brewer in Windham. Through some great detective work, Sue was able to determine that Etta was Esther Whittaker, daughter of Francis and Margaret Whittaker of Catskill. We're still trying to find out who the Haines was that Esther was married to. He was probably born 1855-1860, married about 1879 or 1880, and died about 1881 or so. Something to note is that both Charles E. and Etta list themselves as married in the 1880 census, although there is no spouse in their respective listings. You report Charles E married Deborah Layman--what was the date of that marriage? Mazeppa Brewer's marriage to Etta Haines was reported in the press as "Married, . . .in P r a t t s v i l l e , J u ly 8th . by t h e Rev. W i l l i am Greene. .M. T . Brewer and Mrs. Ettie Haines , both of Hunter."
