    1. [NYGREENE] Etta Haines
    2. Here's a brain teaser Sue Egnor and I worked on last month. In the 1880 census, Etta Haines was listed as 20yrs. old, married, and working as a servant in the home of Catherine Rickerson in Cairo. On July 8, 1883, "Mrs. Ettie Haines" was married to Mazeppa Brewer in Windham. Through some great detective work, Sue was able to determine that Etta was Esther Whittaker, daughter of Francis and Margaret Whittaker of Catskill. We're still trying to find out who the Haines was that Esther was married to. He was probably born 1855-1860, married about 1879 or 1880, and died about 1881 or so. Does any of this ring a bell to anyone?

    3. One possible answer is Charles E. Haines. In the 1880 census, he was living with his parents,Charles and Dame (spelled variously, but this is the 1880 census spelling) in Hunter. Living with them was Alice Haines, age 5, described as the senior Charles Haines' granddaughter. Nobody else was in the household. Ettie Haines and Mazeppa Brewer had 2 daughters: Esther Elberta Brewer b 22 June 1884 and Ida Brewer, born 3 Dec 1885. Esther married married Frederick Egnor. Ida married George Mower. Per the Fulton Postcard site, in January 1948, Schenectady Gazette reported death of Alice May Jones, born Haines Falls, Feb 5, 1876. Survivors included two half-sisters, Mrs. Ida Mower, Newburgh, and Mrs. Frederick Egnor, Catskill. I believe this Alice Haines is Ettie Haines daughter. While it appears she was also Charles and Dame Haines granddaughter, it's not clear that Charles E. Haines, the younger, was her father. I would appreciate comments. I went looking for an Alice Haines, and found one, and only one in the approximate right place and time. Without more, however, I can't be positive a) this Alice is the woman who became Alice May Jones (who, with her husband of 7 years, was living in Hunter in the 1900 census).
