Pelletreau - Genealogical & Family History of NY: 1. William Whitmore Van Loan, b. 16 June 1792. 2. Matthew Dies Van Loan, b. 28 Sep 1794. Probably named for his maternal grandfather. The Linlithgo RDC in Columbia Co has a baptism for William Whitmore Van Loan, son of Isaac Van Loan and Jane Diel. William is born June 16, 1792 and was baptised July 15, 1792. Is this Jane Diel the same as Jane Dies? Isaac Van Loan and Jane Dies had son Matthew Dies Van Loan, born abt 1792. Any thoughts? Agnes, I have found Isaac Van Loan's tombstone in the Catskill Village cemetery. It states that he died 14 Nov 1840 aged 72 yrs. That would put his date of birth abt 1768. Isaac Van Loan who married Jane Diel (I am now thinking likely Tiel is her maiden name) was born 25 Jan 1759, baptised at the Athens Zion Lutheran Church in 1759. It appears these are completely two different Isaacs. I did not dig deeply into this data on Isaac Van Loan, as he and his wife are a side branch of my Dies family. As for Pelletreau, I think I remember reading a statement (incorrect) he made that there were no male descendants of the Dies family. Where, I wondered, did I come from? But in all fairness, he would not have had any knowledge of my branch who moved back to Canada in 1817. They had evacuated NY City with the British in 1783 and spent time in Quebec until the 1790s when they returned to Schoharie Co. There is a discrepancy in the Isaac Van Loan (s/o Petrus VL and Dirkje Visscher or Degarma) DOB: De Boer has it as 1768. He says that this Isaac married Jane Dies, d/o Matthew Dies and Evva Van Loan. The Albany Protocol has it as 25 Jan 1757, but does not follow him further. So there you are. A quandary.
