    1. Re: [NYGREENE] Rev War and locality search
    2. I don't think you can do locality search on DAR system. And I don't think Steve Morse and his one-step search engines have gotten there yet either. (I didn't double check that before sending this though.) But you can do a locality search on www .footnote.com in the pension and service records databases by searching "Greene County" or "County of Greene" though you may need to toss "New York" in with it. (Unlike HeritageQuest / ProQuest which digitized the selected records microfilm, Footnote digitized the complete files microfilm and has an every name index instead of just the soldier whose file it is.) Using footnote I was able to put in my 5th or 6th great uncle's name and find out who all had a letter in their file from Uncle Robert. Uncle Robert did not get a pension for himself (he was doing well for himself) but I learned that quite a few of guys he served with came to him for help proving they served. I'd like to add to Sylvia's Rev War list but I'm pretty sure my uncle Job planted in Rensselaerville Albany County and it was just his son Nathaniel who moved between Albany Co and Catskill Greene Co. 3. Hi Victoria - replying to this email above works just fine. Thank you for the lead on Samuel Cochrane. He is new to my list! If he was a Greene Nountain Boy then he would have known Amos Finch from Sandy Plains, here in the Town of Cairo. He was also a Greene Mtn Boy. 3. And would you include one of our ancestors - Abraham Snyder-- who lived his whole life in Saugerties, served with a group from Saugerties defending the "wilderness" around Schoharie, Herkimer and other places both north (as far as Whitehall, Ft. George and Ft. Edward)) and south (northern NJ) then served at the Battles of Saratoga in the place of two soldier from Catskill? (his pension record actually gives their names-- and I believe one (Trumpbour -sp.)was eventually identified as a Tory. ) >From his pension record: "And in the Summer of 1777, he engaged as a substitute for Nicholas Trumpbour (editor's note: see pdf file - difficult to read) and Johannis Sax in the town of Catskill that he joined the Army under General Schuyler and was with the Army when General Gates took the command and remained in said Army as a private soldier until after the Surrender of General Burgoin(sp)and was detained as a guard to the prisoners and returned home near the middle of November of said year 1777 having as deponent believes been absent for the term of at least four months." If so...Do you want a copy of his pension record in PDF or word for the website? J. Then they may have ridden days to find it and enlist. e.g. there was a Waldron's Regt. located in NH, if I were enlisting, I just might ride over there to sign up instead of joining Platt's or Brinkerhoff's Regt. I think it may be best to examine the records in context of the times. I have a couple of ancestral homesteads now in Greenville, Greenville Center and Coeymans, all of which would have been in Albany Co. during the Revolution, so service records of those enlistees would reflect their home County as Albany. ~ Ron W ~ In God We Trust, All Others We Monitor ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barbara de Mare" <barbarademare@yahoo.com> To: <nygreene@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 29, 2010 1:46 PM Subject: Re: [NYGREENE] Rev War and locality search > Then I need to check my records too, as I had ancestors in Ulster and > Albany, so > should see exactly where they were. 3. No, not Henry Carnright but Jerome (English spelling). He is listed as Heronimus Gerenrick and because Ulster was part of Greene, he just might be one to include, although I know very little about him. He served with Col Johannes Snyder's First Reg., Ulster Co Militia,,,northern Regiment, which might mean present day Greene Co. Source: Brinks Early History of Saugerties, New York. pg. 349. 3. Actually I have not found any land in Greene Co that was given to Rev War soldiers as bounty land. The bounty land tract was in northern New York State. Pretty much all the available land in Greene Co was already wrapped up in old Dutch Patents and Patents issued to officers of the French and Indian Wars and the Hardenburgh Patent as well. Moreso in the Albany Co districts of Coxsackie and the Imbought. However I am casting my net as wide as possible. 3. Hi Ron, sorry, must have misunderstood your question. The book will include soldiers that lived in what is now Greene Co. That would mean soldiers that lived here in the Revolution and those that moved here also. Sound good? 3. Just my opinion, but it may be a bit short-sighted to only include the earliest Greene Co., in that these men would have to find a Regiment or other unit if they wanted to join. Then they may have ridden days to find it and enlist. e.g. there was a Waldron's Regt. located in NH, if I were enlisting, I just might ride over there to sign up instead of joining Platt's or Brinkerhoff's Regt. I think it may be best to examine the records in context of the times. 3. I've never been certain how to post to this list, via email? Or, the web? It never arrives with links back to web locations for NYGreene. (Any help would be appreciated and VERY sorry if this posts and not correctly!) Responding to the Revolutionary War soldiers: I have got one. Samuel Cochrane (Round Top Cemetery), originally a Greene Mountain Boy and from Woodbury CT, served under his cousin, Captain Robert Cochrane. Mary Milks, his widow. I've gathered more information but not as well as a dedicated genealogist...but I follow directions well... just boss me! Many thanks for this list... Victoria Cochran
