The relative I've been in touch with thought Eunice was the daughter of Zadoc Pratt Sr., but she was born 1786, not 1750. She married Joseph Adams and they are both buried in the Pratt Cemetery. Sorry, there was a typo in my previous post. "Worth" is incorrect, it should say worthy. He loved his country and her institutions, and in this respect was a most worthy exemplar. His death was caused by some disease of the digestive organs.

Delia and others. Although a person was drafted, he could hire a substitute to go in his stead. Perhaps that' is what happened here. Delia, The draft listing of Dewitt C. Hinman of Windham is on Ancestry as follows: CONSOLIDATED LIST of all persons of Class II, subject to military duty in the Thirteenth Congressional District, consisting of the counties of Greene and Ulster, State of New York, enumerated during the month of June 1863, under the direction of Joshua Fiero Jr., Provost Marshall: Residence – Windham; Name – Hinman, Dewitt C.; Description: Age 1st July 1863 – 44; White or Colored = White; Profession, Occupation or Trade – Farmer; Place of Birth – New York; Former Military Experience – [blank]; Remarks – [blank]. I’ve sent you an image clip to your e-mail. This list doesn’t indicate that he actually served. There are other men with this name from New York and Michigan in other indexes. There is a Charles D. Hinman from Illinois, but I don’t see a Dewitt. Jim
Hi Sylvia. Have you come across a Dewitt (Clinton) Hinman in your Civil War soldier search. He was my fathers grandfather. I have a copy of his draft from a book but hard to read. It looks like he was drafted June 18?3 into the 13th Congressional District County of Greene under Joshua Furo? Jr., Ulster Co. NY. When he was older, he had a farm on the hill just south of Maplecrest via of East Jewett. According to a report I had found some time ago he was in Co. C. 86th regiment but that was in Illinois. Delia Hi Sylvia.
PS: He was born in England and "Class 2" which undoubtedly would explain why he was exempt from service. Delia, Using Ancestry's index, I do not find any name that was close, even using the soundex system, in either New York or Illinois, of a solder serving under this name. DeWitt C. Clinton, a resident of Windham, aged 44, farmer, is on the draft list of Ulster County. I am certainly not an expert on why those drafted might not have served--that would take some further investigation--but the men on this list are all in their late 30s and 40s.
