I applaud you-- I was a Navy wife for 23 years raised my kids in RI, MD, NY, CT (four times), Va and Germany. Our commissary grocery bags said NAVY WIFE, THE BEST PART OF THE NAVY on them. When my husband retied I was given a pacque by his CO commending my 23 years of service to my country. Thanks Nedra for the corrections. You are correct. I served as an E8 (both MSG and 1SG) and an E9 (both SGM and CSM) so I can confirm those designations. I retired as a CSM. There were some other ranks which are not found as commonly today so would need to be researched a bit to determine where they fall in the "pecking" order. Quartermaster, Adjutant, Brevet, Piper, Drummer, etc., come to mind. Nedra At 02:57 PM 5/3/2011 -0400, you wrote: Thanks Nedra, I guess I should have clarified - it is in the Civil War. OK, I am lost does corporal come before sergeant, and before captain? What is the order for these? Sylvia
Sylvia, If your question is about Civil War era it would be Private, Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, then Captain. My husband's grandfather served as an E7 Master Sergeant in the cavalry in World Wars 1 & 2, so the ranks have changed and expanded. Corrections to the list below-- E-8 MSG Master Sgt has 3 + 3 with nothing in the middle. E-8 1SG First Sgt has 3 + 3 with diamond in the middle (not a E-9) -- my husband was one. E-9 SGM Sgt Major has star in middle E-9 CSM Command Sgt Major has star and wreath Warrant Officers are WOx and a separate "set" from the O-1, etc. Ron has corrected the General ranks. Other services are a bit different. For instance, a Navy Captain is an O-6, just below an Admiral. The Air Force has Airmen, not Privates. Hi folks - I have been asked many times about research at the State Library. I figured it was time to put a research day at the State Library at Albany program together. This would be a fee based research trip. As many of you know I also conduct research for clients for a fee. I am very familiar with the research materials at the State Library and can offer an in depth tour and individual guidance to attendees. This would be a full day event, June 18th, starting at 9:30am until 4:30pm. I will provide pre research day planning for each attendee, in order to maximize the day. If you are interested, let me know at sylvia@northriverresearch.com. Cost for the day trip is $65 per person. For those that are interested in making a weekend event, I can plan a Friday, Saturday and Sunday tour, which would include a Friday Research trip to the State Library at Albany, a Saturday trip to the Vedder Research Library in Greene County and a Sunday tour of Greene County. I can also arrange accommodations and a meal program, with a local resort. Also let me know if you are interested in an expanded research trip. I am pretty flexible and can include research venues in surrounding counties as well. Sylvia
Many, many thanks for the additional support from: Serena B. Bruce S. Marsha T. Melanie C. So many will benefit from your generosity. Sylvia
Hope this might help someone: William Babcock of the Village of Catskill, Greene County, NY, gave an affidavit for the Revolutionary pension of his brother Christopher Babcock who served from Rhode Island. Pension S12032 They are not related to me, at least not directly--just stumbled across this while searching for other Babcocks from Rhode Island. Nedra
