    3. There was an Elisha Powell in Athens, buried in Limestreet Chapel Cemetery. He was a, well, he. I've only seen that first name with surnames that look more or less English. There is a Dutch first name Elsje that is female. Sounds like El-sha. Elisha may be a variant of Elijah. 2. I wholeheartedly agree about Sylvia and the Greene Co. site. Sylvia has been phenomenal responding to my questions and educating me. She's always friendly, responsive, and thorough, and I'm sure none of us have any idea how many hours and effort she has invested. Although I live in the Northwest, she makes me feel like I still have ties to Greene Co. through my ancestors. She helps me keep my Greene Co. ancestors alive in my heart and my mind. 3. This is so true. I believe I have discovered the location of the lost Poor House cemetery for Greene Co. Will track it down in the spring. Few people even know it exists and I am sure there is no marker to designate the spot. We'll see. And, it is true many stones were plowed under, others taken up and used by folks as foundations to buildings or stone pathways, others just picked by joyriders and taken home. Actually have seen some for sale in antique stores. That's why I am trying to get out there and transcribe them all. Sooner or later I will get that done! 3. Where did you find that? I remember doing a town by town search of all Tompkins in the 1830 and 1840 census trying to locate possible families who had a daughter of the right age, and Tim Tompkins was a possibility. I also remember discussing this with someone who was also interested in the Tim Tompkins line, but at the time there was no proof of much. Either someone has a great record, or this is one of those things that someone links together as a best fit, and it becomes a fact with no basis. Thus could you please let me know where you located this info? And thanks for your time in responding. 1. Dead ends - Tompkins and Dunagan + Underhill
    2. Gary Dufel
    3. With all this recent interest on the list, I thought I would post my three dead ends in Greene County. 1. Michael Dunagan (all sorts of phonetic spellings including Dunnigan, Dunnaga, Dunegan, etc) shows up living in Hunter in the 1830 census and based upon a variety of sources I know he was born in about 1804 in Ireland, married Eleanor (Ellen) Underhill and they had two children by 1830. In around 1848 he moved from Hunter to Olive in Ulster County where he died between 1850 and 1855. I have tracked lot's of his children's line. But ... who were his parents, did they come to America with him, and where in Ireland was he born. 2. Sophia Tompkins (possibly aka Eunice Tompkins) was born in Greene County in about 1827 and in 1844 she married Jacob Hornbeck at the Chapman's Hotel in Prattsville. She moved to Denning in Ulster County and Neversink in Sulliavn County, finally being murdered in Accord, Ulster County in 1868 at the hands of her second husband Jeremiah Smith - a man "too worthless for work" according to the news reports at the time. Who were the parents of Sophia/Eunice Tompkins. I have always assumed she must have lived somewhere in or near Prattsville due to the location of her marriage, but who knows? 3. The parents of previously mentioned Elenore Underhill were William Underhill (of Amenia, Greene County per the Underhill book) and Martha b. Hunter, Greene on June 9, 1783, d. May 5, 1822. But what was the full name of Martha? If anyone provides any answers or clues, you will have my eternal gratitude ... the Catskill region of NY has always been a blackhole of records in my family!! 2. Hi Sylvia, I've been searching for years for the records to the Lexington Old School Baptist Church. My 4th g-grandfather and grandmother were charter members. Right down to my g-grandfather they all attended and were married in that church. It was suggested that they had been sent to the Grand Gorge Old School Bapti st Chruch after the church in Lexington closed. I followed that lead and no luck. They haven't seen them. The folks at the Windham Journal referred me to the present minister of the Lexington Baptist Church, who I attempted to contact. I tried by phone while I was in Lexington; and again by mail after I returned home. I never received a response. Those records are a missing link for many of us whose ancestors attended. 2. Hello Mignon: On the various spellings of the O'Brien/O'Brian/O'Bryan name. I had always been told that the differences were based on religion. The original family spelling had been O'Brian or O'Bryan but my G-grandmother, Mary Bridget Stanton, an Irish Catholic immigrant who worked for the Colgate's refused to marry my G-grandfather, Clarence O'Brian unless he changed the spelling of his name from the Protestant to the Catholic spelling. He was a plumber and they met when he went to the Colgate's to repair their plumbing. True or not... I don't know. Another part of the O'Brien lore holds that the name is not really Irish, but actually of Dutch origin. I have absolutely no evidence of this. I've had no luck breaking through any of these O'Brien mysteries. Tom

Going back to our conversation on the Van Loon cemeteries, I remember in Beer's History of Greene County that some of the chapter authors spoke of cemeteries disappearing way back in 1884. And your surveys sometimes note missing stones in still existing cemeteries. I wonder if some of the old private cemeteries were simply overtaken by nature and neglect. More ominously I wonder if some of the gravestones in plots in the middle of fields disappeared below plow depth - you know just sink the stones a little bit. Or wound up dragged away for use as footings for the porch steps. In my built-up town in North Jersey I went looking for a Reformed Dutch Church cemetery as a random act of kindness last year. Somebody had seen an old transcript of it that had been put on a website. I had never heard of the cemetery and initially told him there was no such thing, but after some digging into old building records found out where the old church had been before being torn down sometime in the mid-1900's. According to the old records, the cemetery was off to one side of the church. So I went down and paced off to the best of my ability where the old church and cemetery should have been. There was a small, relatively recent apartment building, a parking lot, an unpaved area and then a property line for a private home. No cemetery, no stones, just that small piece of unpaved, unused ground. Begging the question - was that it and, if so, what happened to it. Nobody knows. The interred are still there or they were moved. Maybe there's something at the county level, but nobody local knows what happened to the previously interred. One break in the chain of knowledge and a cemetery gets anonymous real quick. Jim

    1. Volunteers
    2. Sylvia Hasenkopf
    3. Many hearty thanks to the five volunteers who have offered to do some obituary typing. I have almost a year's backlog, and this will reduce that by 1/4th . If we can ever catch up, I will start to make copies of obituaries prior to 2002 and work our ways backwards. Thanks once again!!! Sylvia
