However the heirs were identified in a deed transcaction that distributed the deceased person's land to his heirs. Quite interesting and somewhat rare, but a valuable tool, nonetheless. Sylvia

    3. James, I found the will abstract last night & sent an email to Vedder Library for the complete Will packet. I am hoping it sheds some more light on this elusive family. The children's names are listed in a bio of Robert in "Wood Co, OH Atlases 1875-1912". Robert married his wife in Wood Co, OH & lived there for a little while after service in the Civil War. His brother Jonas lived next door according to the 1870 census. His sister Eleanor is listed in his obituary. Thanks Sherri James Brady <brady.j@att.net> wrote: Hi Sherri, I show the kids as Sarah Levina, Jonas Bronk, Mary and Robert. All mentioned in a will abstract as found in Abstracts of Wills of Greene County: 1:84, Catharine Bronk of Coxsackie. Will Probated September 18, 1848. Heirs: nephew Jones; children of sister Rachel Catherine, Cuyler Turn Bull, Sarah Lovina Bull and Mary Turn Bull. Executor: Isaac C. Collyer. Witnesses: D. Kirtland, Jacob D. Sharp, Robert Vandenbergh, Jonas Collin. A look at the will might make the above abstract a little more clear. The punctuation of Ray Sawyers abstracts is sometimes a little cryptic. A look at the probate package that goes with the will might/probably give the current addresses of the heirs. Where did you get the names of the other children? I am looking for anyone who descends from a child Ann Bronck & James Turnbull, who were married in Coxsackie, Greene Co, NY 23 May 1829. Children are: Sarah Levina, Mary, Jonas, Robert (my husband's ancestor), Rachel Catherine, Eleanor, Lydia A, Emeline, and Lucinda. Ann is the daughter of Jonas & Rachel (Collier) Bronk, and a direct descendant of the builder of the Bronck house in Greene Co, NY. Any information about what happened to James and Ann would be appreciated as well. Sarah, Mary, Jonas & Robert were baptized in April 1839 at the Dutch Reformed Church in Coxsackie. James & Anna, along with her brother Michael & wife Sarah, sell land in early 1839 and disappear. I find what could be the kids living with other families in 1850 census. Jonas & Robert both join the Civil War from Ohio. They both marry there & Robert stays while Jonas goes to Kansas & then Louisiana where he dies. 3. Remember probate files usually contain alot more information than the will itself. Just think of how complicated our legal system is. This was defintely true years ago as well. Many people died without wills (intestate). The probate files would then provide the information of the heirs and the estate. Perhaps, others will also want to check it out. I hope that this is not considered a violation, as I have no connection to the WJ. I merely mentioned it as a source of information about the area and the people who lived there as far back as 1860. 3. Just wanted to put in my two cents. I am on our county's pioneer cemetery restoration committee in Iowa. We are finishing up the process of researching pioneer cemeteries (if I recall, the definition of a pioneer cemetery is one that has had fewer than 5 burials in the past 50 years). When we find a cemetery, we transcribe the stones that are found, but we also probe the ground to find buried stones. You can use a homemade probe about 3 feet long, but be careful not to damage the stones. Most times the stones will just be 2 feet or less under the topsoil. One cemetery only had 2 stones leaning against trees, but subsequent probing found about 4 more, and the soil protects the marble from weathering. The inscriptions on the buried stones have been very crisp and clear - no rubbing was necessary. I guess for any cemetery that has a private owner, you would have to have permission to probe and dig the stones. I walked a cemetery for some cousins and found the lot where the ancestors were buried, but no stones. But I suspect that the stones are just under the topsoil - I don't know if the city-owned cemetery would let me probe and dig. It's just like a treasure hunt! And, for what it's worth, my Greene County ancestors were Thomas Gay and Kate Hallenbeck Gay. After Kate's death in 1895, Thomas and children moved by train to Iowa (yes, Sylvia, sometime I will post this info on the migrations database!!), but one child, Daisy Gay Lampman, remained in Greene County. They all lived in the Coxsackie area. Thomas' parents were Albert and Maria Gay, I don't know who Kate's parents were. Merri Cross

    3. I just want to echo Jim's sentiments. I have been a member of the list for some time and a contributor to the Greene County site though I haven't always been too vocal. I have followed the exchanges between Jim and Sylvia and appreciate the humor. I too have been a member of the Dutch Colonies list and I know what Jim is referring to. This list and the Greene County site can not be beat! It would be grand if there were more sites available with so much information. It seems free information on the web is almost becoming a thing of the past. Thanks is sometimes is an inadequate word! Jackie

    3. Hello. Thanks Sherri Wells Findlay, OH

    3. Gina said: >People, let's not underestimate her or "bite the hand that feeds us". >Sylvia is a one of a kind....dilligent, trust worthy, honest & true to >genealogy. Let's not destroy her faith in us as a worthy genealogical >mailing list & PLEASE SYLVIA, do not let the ill comments of others destroy >all of your hard work & all of your good intentions. On this list, you have >been my hero. A big thanx to you! Did I miss something? I thought I was paying attention here. Oh, I see my name referenced below. Gina, you need to understand, Sylvia loves feedback. She asks for it on a regular basis. It's a way to jump start the list when things are quiet and/or she's re-energized from two weeks in Cancun, or whatever. E-mail is often a difficult language to decipher as you can't see the non-verbal tics, winks, knowing smiles, etc. So while my feedback may seem critical to you, I'm assuming that after five years worth of e-mail conversations with Sylvia that she knows where I'm coming from, so to speak. I've never known her to be incapable of defending herself. Forcefully, when needed. I have a great deal of respect for Sylvia and assume, perhaps wrongly, that she feels the same for me. NAH!, we're buddies. (Feel free to jump in here Sylvia.) If you do feel respect for Sylvia, and that also goes for many others on this list, you can pay her no higher compliment than to participate fully on this, her, list. I subscribe to one list, among others - Dutch Colonies, for really early research - that has the most brilliant researchers that I've ever heard from. Not that we don't have them here also. However, one or two of them (not the smart ones on that list), for whatever reason, are so snotty that they have managed to reduce participation on the list. Over really petty issues. They've just cowed people into silence. So, again, you can pay Sylvia no higher compliment that to be an active participant on this list.
