Olean Democrat April 28, 1887 Death's Doings Lillian J. daughter of William and Sarah J. Van Allen of Coxsackie. N.Y., died at the residence of Rev. T. J. Jackson, Tuesday afternoon. Funeral service is tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the A.M.E. church. Olean Democrat May 4, 1897 Death of William H. Miller NEW YORK, May 4- William H. Miller was in the habit of taking sulphonal for headache.
Hi Tom, The meanings of the different spellings of the O'Bs is very interesting. Religion was such a factor in acceptance in those days, wasn't it? I love the story about your G-grandparents! I guess he proved his devotion by changing his name and that is a sweet story. As to the mysteries, the O'Bs have no corner on that problem. My maiden name is Matthews and, after I divorced, I took it back; so, I find it particularly annoying that I cannot get back the next generation on them. I have my GGGgrandparents, John Albert (1803-1855) and his wife, Salina Hosford (1809-1884), but they both seem to have sprung into Ashland fully grown without parents for all I can find. I guess I should stop chatting and get to some serious research. They MUST be out there somewhere. It's always good to hear from you. Take care. WOW Greene county has practically went global lol!! Sylvia Hasenkopf <esi@francomm.com> wrote: Well, I wanted to take a few moments to thank the 15 volunteers, so far, that have agreed to do some typing. This has cleared up the backlog of typing of obituaries for the Daily Mail, Windham Journal, Greenville Local. Still have a packet of Greenville Press for anyone interested. What surprised me most was how far flung the volunteers lived. Here's a breakdown: Ohio Maine California Utah New Jersey (2) North Carolina Kentucky Nevada New York Virginia Alberta, Canada Florida Georgia Wisconsin Now that is amazing! Thank you very much, each and every volunteer. If you need anything, just let me know. All packets are in the mail today. Please let me know when you receive them. I worry about the mail sometimes - I have lost a few packets before. Hi Merri, Buried with Albert Gay and his wife Mary was presumed son Calvin Gay, b. Apr 1, 1856, d. Nov 2, 1893. Maybe the same as the Cal mentioned in your bible? On the Hallenbeck siblings - I've got Mary, but not her parents - two Emmas married a Perry, one known to be a Hallenbeck. Maybe if you wrote up the bible for inclusion on Sylvia's website we could all take a crack at it and maybe get you back a little farther. I've been wondering if Albert was the same one baptized at Catskill Reformed on 31 Aug 1821." - from Jim Brady All I know about Thomas Gay's parents are their names, the information was found in a family Bible. Thomas Gay was born 8 May 1839, m. Kate Hallenbeck 2 Oct 1870, so the birth dates of Albert and Maria could be possible. Thomas was the second eldest child. His siblings were John, Ada (married a Thomas), Alice, Mime, Carrie (married a Sager), Harrison, Bub (do not know his given name) and Cal. The last three are noted in the Bible as "sailors who died on the ocean." And I think Limestreet is a familiar location, seems I found Thomas at that address in a directory. Kate's siblings were Emma (m. a Perry, possibly they are the ones buried at Colleburgh Cemetery, Athens), Josephine (m. Frank Spoor), Frances (m. a McCarthy), Mary (m. Elijah Powell), Gertie (m. a Baker and moved to Oakes, ND, to live with her brother after she was widowed), Laura, Henry, and Charlie (moved to Oakes, ND). Kate was born 28 Sep 1847, d. 2 Mar 1895. The cemeteries I work at are in Mitchell County, Iowa. Check out our website at http://www.rootsweb.com/~iamitche. We have almost all cemeteries transcribed except for a couple of the larger ones. But we don't have near as many as Greene County has. One other note: my great-grandma Bessie Gay Bird, Thomas' daughter, was full of "mountain stories and superstitions." I just wanted to ask some of you to verify this for me. She called the small white spring flowers "poss-bloomies." Did that name originate from the Catskills? No, my records don't have the Preston Hollow Methodist Church. That one may have been on the Catskill Circuit, which I hope to copy sometime soon, and answer your question. The Kiskatom Circuit covers the following churches: Asbury (Ulster Co) High Falls Kiskatom Round Top Palenville And, only for the years 1860-1888. My Ferris family were pretty much >in Ashland area and easier to find, but from there they fanned out into the >rest of the country. Hi Annette, Funny you should mention the Bogardus family. There is an article in the latest issue of the NYG&B Record by William J. Parry called "Revolutionary War Service Records Hidden in the Pension Files". What makes it interesting here is that the records he discusses, quite well, are from the Coxsackie area. I highly recommend the article to anyone as it's an interesting way to get beyond the paucity of certain types of records. It turns out that some veterans of that war don't show on official rosters, nor did they apply for pensions, but their service is mentioned in the pension files of other veterans. Why does that involve the Bogardus family? While unstated in the article, his motivation was to try to prove the marriage of a Hannah Bogardus into his family line. He's got a highly likely oral tradition in the family, but hasn't found a single piece of provable evidence in years of searching. So the pension files he looked at originally were for Bogardus, his interest piqued he started looking at other microfilmed pension files and eventually developed his now published article. It's funny how information and expertise gets acquired and disseminated just because somebody got curious. Or frustrated. Let me know if you need help with the Bogarduses. Jim

He was buried at Rural Cemetery , next to his son, which I believe is in Albany.
