    3. THanks, Annette. I don't see a connection yet, but I am holding on to this in my Hosford file. I have so little information that I can confirm at this point that I am holding onto anything that looks possible and this is one of those things. Thanks again! 3. Yes, I am the researcher Judy hired and I also have a pile of inputs for the Laymans about 6 inches high. Whittling away at that as time permits and continuing to add info I find locally as well - more confirmation of info rather than a whole lot new. Now, bear with me because I still can't find the fit - who are William's parents - is it Ephraim and Elisabeth Deyo Layman? 3. Somehow, Judy found me! She gave me info back to Clements Lehmann, his descendants and some spouses. Then she found another shirttail cousin, Winnie, who also sent me a lot of info. There is so much (Judy's info was 546 pages printed out!!!) that I haven't begun to add it all to my database. And then yet another cousin found me. I host the LAYMAN mailing list on Rootsweb, and each of them had been a member at one time or another. William married Emma "Vina" Jennison Mitchell. Winnie said he also married Frances Jennison, and she believes they were sisters. I need to go into Olympia and get their death certificates because of a couple things: 1. I had William's middle initial as T or J, but his headstone has L. 2. I had Emma middle name as Frances. But Winnie believes Frances was her sister. William and Emma are buried about 45 minutes north of me at Retsil, Kitsap Co, WA. They both lived at the Old Soldiers Home in Retsil, a facility still in operation but no longer federal, it's run by the state. William must have had military service to live there, and Emma was allowed to due to his service...but I don't have that info yet...unless it's in the mounds of paperwork I received from Winnie and Judy. Both are buried in the Unionville Cemetery on the Bath Cameron Road in Bath. I know of 2 children Henry L. b. 1848 and Seymour b. 1862. Olive may be a member of your Hosford family. 3. Hi Sylvia, THANK YOU! I will be more than happy to send you $5.00 for the search. Please let me know where to send it. According to Selina's obit: "The Windham Journal, weekly newspaper published at Windham, Greene County, New York, issue of Thursday, June 26, 1884, Died: MATTHEWS - In the town of Conesville, N. Y., June 20th, Salina Matthews, formerly of Ashland,) aged 79 years." Perhaps one of the children lived in Conesville; but, I never got to checking that out. Her name may have been spelled Selina, as is common, or Salina, as shown in the obit. It would be great if it names her parents. Mignon "There are many intelligent species in the universe. 1. Re: [GREENE COUNTY] Lexington Baptist Church records
    2. Sylvia: Would you please look at the Methodist records you mentioned below and see if these contain the records for the Preston Hollow Methodist Church also. I have been searching and writing requests for these and to find they might be in with these for Catskill. Yes the Preston Hollow Church is in Albany Co. lest be about maybe 5 miles from the Now Greene Couny border. I have several Families that were in this church and have only one original baptism for Smith family.Family has said that many baptisms and deaths were recorded for this church. 3. Sylvia, you can add Washington state to the list. I'd be happy to type for you. I'm researching my Lehmann/Lehman/Layman/Laymon line in Green County, primarily around Catskill and Athens. The futhest back I have is Clements LEHMANN, born 1686 in Kallstadt, Germany, died 1752 in Athens, Greene Co, NY. The name spelling changed every generation until we got to LAYMAN, but there are descendants using the various spellings. My branch of the family moved to Minneapolis, and eventually to western Washington and Oregon. My gr-gr-grandfather was William Layman, b 1847 in NY, d 1918 WA. shirley :) Sylvia Hasenkopf wrote: >Well, I wanted to take a few moments to thank the 15 volunteers, so far, that have agreed to do some typing. 2. Sylvia: I must say this is one of the most informative sites that I have visited and supplied info for and most are appreciative of the fact. I only wish that persons would remember that the old ways were the ways of the times and we are in a new version of the old ways. What we put down in the old way is preserving not revision to make it more palatable for the readers. That now said Sylvia I would be glad to help in typing for the list. I have some older obits as I have collected them since 1998 and maybe some from before from Mountain Eagle and other newspapers. 1. Re: [GREENE COUNTY] Ireland
    2. Hi Peigi, > I'm sure you've tried this, but if not, it's what I do when I can't > find a surname spelling variation in ancestry.com: <snip> Yes, thanks, I've tried that. But my problem is tracing these people back to Ireland. They were here by the 1820/30s. Can't even find them on ship lists. And even if I had a county in Ireland, and wanted to pay a fortune to have baptisms searched, there would probably have been a hundred or so men with the name (or variant) born that year. ;) As I said, it is looking for hay in a haystack. Doesn't help that no death or burial record for one ancestor (should have been buried at the RC church in Hunter; he donated to build the place!) has surfaced. :( They should also have his wife, who remains "Whatsername." :(( Thanks, Peggy

    3. Peggy, I'm sure you've tried this, but if not, it's what I do when I can't find a surname spelling variation in ancestry.com: I go to the particular year, put in the county and town, and where born. Sometimes I do it for the whole county, as the town lines merge or change. Sometimes I do the above and just the first name, although there can be spelling variations with first names as well. Soundex doesn't work on them. Case in point: our first names. Plus, the Irish/Scottish naming conventions & tee-names need taken into account. Of course, if the family is from the 'auld sod' there may be lots......and given the 'lilt' of speech, often misunderstood. And then there's Mc & Mac, and are they written as one word or two.......... 3. Well, I wanted to take a few moments to thank the 15 volunteers, so far, that have agreed to do some typing. This has cleared up the backlog of typing of obituaries for the Daily Mail, Windham Journal, Greenville Local. Still have a packet of Greenville Press for anyone interested. What surprised me most was how far flung the volunteers lived. Here's a breakdown: Ohio Maine California Utah New Jersey (2) North Carolina Kentucky Nevada New York Virginia Alberta, Canada Florida Georgia Wisconsin Now that is amazing! Thank you very much, each and every volunteer. If you need anything, just let me know. All packets are in the mail today. Please let me know when you receive them. I worry about the mail sometimes - I have lost a few packets before. Sylvia

    3. Mignon, I will be heading up to the Albany State Library sometime inthe next month to do some research. I could check the vital records index to see if Selina is there. Possibly she was never recorded as the state started the mandatory recording in 1882 and the first 5-6 years are actually somewhat spotty. If she is there, however, it will show where she died. I have seen instances where the State has the record and the Town does not, and vice versa. It is worthwhile to check both. For a specific date seach such as this I do charge a small fee, however - $5. Sylvia ----- Original Message ----- From: "M. Pitt was the son of Reuben Hosford who came to Greene Co. NY around 1789 with his father Gideon Hosford and brother Joel Hosford. Mignon ************************************************************ I have checked in Columbia County for John's parents, but can't be sure due to the lack of names on the census at that time. I continue to search..... Thanks for the response. Please let me know if anything else comes to mind. Gratefully, Mignon "There are many intelligent species in the universe. Hi Mignon, If these are the right people. . . . According to the 1855 census index, John sprang from Columbia County. He was 51, and had been in Ashland 44 years. Selina, 50, was born in Greene Co., and had been in Ashland for 50 years. Children: Lauren 17, Hannah 13. (Was George Mathew, 21, also in Ashland, married to Martha, child Milo 2, a son?) No Hosfords in Ashland, but I didn't look for wild spellings. Regards, Peggy
