    3. Sylvia Continuing the letter written by Margaret Carlow on Dec 19, 1995: When grandfather (Benjamin Scudder Maben) died, there was no longer any room in the Cross cemetery, so they buried him outside of it, near the children. I saw the grave myself. The family erected a large--5 feet high tombstone in the Maben family plot, in Lexington. I remember that we were asked to send money to help pay for it. So when I saw the tombstone with no body buried there, I was surprised. They said, "We did the best we could." 3. There have been so many postings lately that I have not read all of them I missed the CROSS item but the name rang a bell so decided to write. Does your CROSS family fit into our Maben line? l also would like to hear from any other Mabens out there or anyone with records that pertain to Maben family....... I descend from Benjamin Scudder Maben (b. 1856) son of William Charles Maben (1822-1885) and Catherine Wyckoff (1821-1900). I have a lot of family info but for this posting will give this. Some of what my grandmother wrote follows: The Maben's home in NY was Greene County. The first grave in Prattsville was a Maben. Catherine Wyckoff and William Charles Maben had several children. Among them were Mary Maben Moseman, George (who became a lawyer and died as a young man), Charles who taught school and farmed in Prattsville and Benjamin Scudder Maben. William Charles and Catherine Wyckoff also had a son William Charles born 1855 and died 1937 According to family info he married Minnie Alida Kurau (1862-1941) they had 8 children and two married CROSS family members These were Ethel Naomi Maben who married Herbert James CROSS and Maida Catherine Maben who married Merritt Emmett CROSS My grandmother, Mary Emma Maben Imeson Gano, was the daughter of Benjamin Scudder Maben and Emma Landphair. She had other brothers and sisters: Robert and Grace who died young as children Ben Maben who lived in CA and Ruth Carlow who lived in ID Ruth's daughter, Margaret, was a missionary. In a letter dated Dec 19, 1995 Margaret Carlow wrote about the CROSS family telling about her grandfather Benjamin Scudder Maben after his wife Emma died in Wyoming: Shortly after (his wife's death) that Grandfather went back to Lexington near Prattsville, NY. He went to church, Methodist, on a Sunday and the minister spoke on heaven. He had the stroke on Wednesday, following. He was staying with Maida (Maben) the mother of Emma CROSS Grinnell..... she also tells about the death of the young Robert and Grace from diptheria and the burial of them in the CROSS cemetery. when the grandfather died there was no more room in the CROSS family cemetery so they buried him right outside of it. does this mean anything to your CROSS family????? julie eden On Saturday, March 12, 2005, at 08:58 AM, Merri Cross wrote: > My husband's Cross family came from IL. 2. Hello Sylvia: I agree that O'Brien sounds very Irish. That's the story that had been handed down though. Interestingly, Sylvia Magin replied that one of her aunts was an O'Brien and that the old pronunciation was actually o-BREE-on. This is exactly the pronunciation that I had been told about. I was also told that the spelling was something like Obryyn. I'm not sure whether the unusual pronunciation led to speculation that the root was actually a Dutch name or if there is basis for that claim. I do have 1790 census data for Thomas O'Brien in Resselaerville, Albany County and an account of him arriving in East Jewett about 1806 (Early Settlers of East Jewett by Horatio N. Beach, reprinted from Catskill Examiner, 17 August 1871). Both of those references are to Thomas O'Brien. Does Obryyn or Obyun make any more sense to you? Thanks, Tom McHugh PS: I agree with all of the 'fan-mail' that you've been getting. This is a fantastic group here and you seem to be the driving force. Thanks again.

They came to Steuben County with the first few children and had many more born in the Town of Bath on top of the Bath Cameron Road hill. Most of the family is buried up there in the Unionville Cemetery and a few are buried in the Village of Bath Cemeteries. I don't think your branch is any of mine. Thanks for contacting me tho. Mary Ferris and her family are the line of most interest to me. Annette Campbell

    3. Sylvia..YOU are the real hero! We all appreciate everything you have already put online for all of us to enjoy. You are truly amazing and greatly appreciated! This has cleared up the backlog of typing of obituaries for the Daily Mail, Windham Journal, Greenville Local. Still have a packet of Greenville Press for anyone interested. > > What surprised me most was how far flung the volunteers lived. Thank you very much, each and every volunteer. If you need anything, just let me know. All packets are in the mail today. Please let me know when you receive them. I worry about the mail sometimes - I have lost a few packets before. > > Sylvia > > ______________________________

    3. Sylvia, this is what I have - part of it I received from Judy Morgan. Beginning with William and Emma (my gr-gr-grandparents), I added from Grandma and Mom's statements, plus my own knowledge. The ironic thing about all this is that we never knew Grandpa William Layman had any siblings. Once we connected, I found out that MY branch was the elusive one!!
