Linda, John Barkley left a will probated Dec 22, 1879. You can view the abstraction on the Greene Co. site. In it he names children: Benjamin, Eliza, wife of Romain Butts, Emily, Luann, Margaret, wife of Horace Towner, and Hariett. Also, wife, Rosina. The other girl's husbands are named, also. I just don't haves the names at hand right now. Could you check and see if Rosina Barkley left a will? She died in March 1886, about seven years after her husband John Barkley. Rosina's maiden name was Kipp. They had eight children that I know of, but I don't know that they all lived to adulthood. I believe I am living in the house of John Person and Sarah Layman along Kaaterskill Creek in Catskill. I have an old map and I am guessing that the Abraham Layman noted on this map might be Sarah's father. He was living across the road from John and Sarah and perhaps gave them the land to build the home.....a wedding gift perhaps? 1857-J. Person John Person, son of Hezekiah and Margaret Person, was born at Catskill in 1825, and was married in 1854 to Sarah C. Layman of Catskill. They had two sons and one daughter, Mary (b abt 1856), William H. (b abt 1859) and John H. (b abt 1862). Family is found in the 1870 and 1870 census records. 1896 Greene County Directory: John Person---farmer 107 acres PO Catskill Any info on either family (and info on the Little Delaware Turnpike that passed by the house) would be of interest. Sylvia: I think that is a possibility that she and William are buried in Columbia Co. Her sister Ann E. move there where the John H. Moore family is from. Their mother Mary Miller Brown Herrick also moves to Columbia Co. Janice >> She may well not be buried there. It was common then, as it is now to put the names and birth dates of the surviving spouse on the tombstone when it was being chiseled for the recently depoarted, so that all that had to be completed was the date of death when the surviving spouse died. Perhaps Caroline and William are buried toghether - perhaps in Columbia Co??

Sylvia: Yes. Interesting that she is with Calvin. No date of death listed. Whatever happened to William J. Wells? Could it be that arrangements were made when she was m. to Calvin to be buried with him and their children? Do you know if their is a marker for her? Or just a written record? May be that she is not even buried there. I found this on the NYGREENE roots web site. Coxsackie Cemetery Calvin T. Searles 11 Mar 1831-2 Feb 1870 Carolie Searles 15 Mar 1832- w/o Calvin T. (nee BROWN) Susie Searles 20 Dec 1855-22 Jul 1873 "Daughter" Carrie Searles 12 May 1858-6 Dec 1863 / Nellie Searles 2 Sep 1862-27 Sep 1863 / Their Children Ella Searles 2 Sep 1862-25 Oct 1864 / Janice >> have you discovered where Caroline is buried?
Janice, given the marriage info for 1874, census data giving age, I am pretty sure this is the same guy. Sylvia, You sure do have a busy site, good leadership and many followers I do enjoy reading all that comes thru. Do you think that you could find any wills or probates that you could copy for me for either David W. Duncan 1823-1891 dies in Cairo, N.Y. OR ORSON Howard 1806- 1892, brother Moses Howard 1810- 1888 or their father Thomas Howard 1773abt.- 1835. You may recall that you did some research on Thomas and wife Mehibitable. I will be glad to pay $5 each. Many thanks. I will heading to the Vedder at the beginning of April and have some room for some research. Anyone need a will? I do charge a small fee of $5 per will or probate packet plus the copy and postage charges. Just let me know. I agree that more research is needed to clear this up. The will is for a William I. not J. Have you seen the original will to see if it is a 'J' or an 'I'? Interesting the son is Christopher as a heir. >> Nope, haven't seen the underlying will. "I" and "J" were written similarly for many years so I wouldn't put too much stock in that. Even if the will doesn't clear that up, the rest of the paperwork in the probate package should by giving more context. Strange that neither(?) William J. Wells has a gravestone that I can find. Interesting the son is Christopher as a heir. Janice >> Interesting. Either I have the incorrect will abstract for this particular William J. Wells and he lived longer and married Caroline Searles (nee Brown)- or - I have the correct will abstract for this William J. Wells who then died before the 3 June 1872 probate date and you need to look for another William J. Wells of the same age as this one!
