Pat, I was curious to know if there is a way to check for a marriage announcement in the Windham Journal. The marriage took place in Windham Centre Sept. 8, 1868, and the couple was Parley Angle, of Shandaken (born in Lexington), and Augusta Whitcomb of Jewett. Augusta’s brother Ogden Whitcomb married Melissa Johnson on the same day, and the couples served as witnesses for each other’s ceremonies. Stiles Curtis married Mrs. Mary Jane Ham at Windham Centre on 18 Apr 1870. He is buried in the Windham Cemetery but has no gravestone. The Windham Journal, issue of Thursday, September 8, 1892, Local Eyelets: Stiles Curtis, formerly a respected resident of Windham, died at the County House at Cairo, on Monday. He used to own the place now owned by Thomas Cryne, and did day's work, when wanted. He was faithful as an employee, and we trust he has found joyful rest in death. His remains were brought to this place for burial, on Tuesday. Sarah (Scudder) Curtis, second wife of Jared Clark, died 15 Jan 1870, not 1890. According to records of the Catskill Reformed Dutch Church, Sarah and Jared were married 24 Sep 1829. Jared's first wife was Anna Webster. Hi Jane, Interesting question - I've copied the list as well, hope you don't mind. The DAR has a whole series of volumes of NY State records. I use the ones at the NYC Library when I visit there, but I understand that the State Library at Albany also has copies. The volume I referred to is cataloged as APR (New York) (D.A.R. New York. Cemetery, church and town records of New York State) v. 580 at the NYC Library and covers many Greene County cemeteries. Think about that for a moment - Volume 580 - and it gives you an idea of just how much information the State Chapters of the DAR have collected over the years. Sylvia has used the above volume for some of her cemetery listings. And that's only one of the several of series of publications the NY DAR has done. I've copied below my notes on what the NYC State Library has (I think I pulled it off their website): New York State DAR Records at the NY State Library Daughters of the American Revolution, New York. Bible Records. v.1-. 1924-. 230 volumes. (R,929,qD23). Primarily a collection of family Bible record, the series also includes many genealogies. Indexed in Master Index, New York State DAR Genealogical Records (R,929,qD23m) and Master Index, Supplement 1972-1978, Records and Corrections (R,929,qD23m,1972b). These records are also listed in the surname card index in the Genealogy/Local History area of the New York State Library. ----. Cemetery, Church and Town Records. v.1-. 1926-. 572 volumes. (R,974.7,qD23). Vital data (baptisms, marriages, deaths, etc.) from church, cemetery and local records in New York State. The series includes some census records, obituaries, and naturalization records. Indexed in Master Index, New York State DAR Genealogical Records (R,929,qD23m) and Master Index Supplement 1972-1978, Records and Corrections (R,929,qD23m,1972b). These records are also indexed in the vital records card index in the Genealogy/Local History area of the New York State Library. ----. Family Histories. v.1-. 1979-. 13 Volumes. Some updated and documented DAR family histories. Records are indexed in the surnames card index in the Genealogy/Local History area of the New York State Library. ----. Genealogical Data: New Project. Ser. A-. 1960-. 145 Volumes. (R,929,qD23d). Genealogical forms submitted to the Genealogical Records Committee, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution by applicants for membership in the DAR. Often called the "grandfather papers," the forms trace each applicant's lineage from her grandparents to her Revolutionary War ancestor. Birth, marriage and death data are given for each generation. Indexed in the New Project: Genealogical Data card index in the Genealogy/Local History area of the New York State Library. ----. Graves of Revolutionary Soldiers in New York. 1922-1955. 15 Volumes. (R,973.3447,qA2c). Names and graves of Revolutionary War soldiers buried in New York State. Indexed in the Revolutionary War soldiers card index in the Genealogy/Local History area of the New York State Library. ----. Lineage Books. 1890-1921. 166 Volumes. (R,369.135,A). Located at the end of the DAR Records section of the New York State Library. Lineage and patriot service summarize for each member listed, national number noted. Indexed in DAR Index to the Lineage Books (also known as Index to the Rolls of Honor or Ancestor Index). ----. DAR Patriot Index. (R,929,D238) indexes name, date, wives, state served, and patriotic services. These books are located just before the Lineage Books in the DAR records section of the New York State Library. -----Original Message----- From: Jane Freese [mailto:kiskatom3@mhcable.com] Sent: Thursday, March 31, 2005 9:05 PM To: James Brady Subject: DAR Cemeteries Jim, You made reference to a DAR listing of Cemeteries in a message to Greene County Site recently. I'm taking a stab at sorting out the names of some Allen family members I've come across. My ancestor was Jacob Allen (b. 1776, son of James and Celetje Leroy) and I'm trying to figure out which Allen family they belonged to. Does anyone know anything about the following? 1) James Allen m. to Elisabeth Steward - their daughter Pricilla was born 25 June 1808, baptized at Gilboa/Dyse's Manor 2) Debora Allen m. to James Van Loon - they named a son Jacob Allen, b. 9 Dec. 1806. Was this the Debora b. 1775 whose parents were Samuel Ellen and Natge Van Berg? 3) Any information about the origins of the Samuel Brandow who was married to Maria Brandow? Is this Samuel the same as in 2)? I know there was Jesse Allen from New Jersey who moved to Bradford Co, PA and the Joseph Allen family who came via Rhode Island. I think others came directly from CT and MA. Anyone know anything that might point the way? Thanks for any help, Karol
Chapple or Chapel Cemetery is known by several names. Lime Street, Chapel, Lime Street Chapel or, Sylvia, I think, calls it Colleburgh Cemetery on her website. I'm thinking of updating my database to show it as Lime Street Chapel (Colleburgh)Cemetery. I use Chapple, for now, because I first saw it referenced that way in a DAR volume on Greene County cemeteries. Jim
Hi Jeremy, You're welcome. Between the Vedder Library and the Courthouse in Catskill you should be able to put some "flesh" on that skeletal outline. I still haven't figured out where the beginning Casper J. Hallenbeck comes from. The early Dutch named their kids after their grandparents so after a few generations it's hard to keep track of all the Caspers. Copies were in the NYS Library in Albany, and in the Puiblic Library >in New York City on fifth avenue. There are probably other copies. It had >hundreds of pages. Here's my notes on Bessie Shaver's work: "Seems comprehensive for early years but begins to fall off after 1800's. It seems to rely heavily on other earlier genealogies like Van Deusen [proven often wrong], Spoor [usually reliable], Dutch Settlers Society of Albany yearbooks [sometimes horrendous], regional compendiums [vanity books], etc. Sources aren't cited for specific facts." What does that mean? Like any compiled genealogy you need to test ALL of the assertions made by Bessie Shaver by looking at the underlying records, like baptisms and such. If Bessie relied on a flawed, previously-compiled, genealogy in her work, then her work is equally flawed. Since she doesn't cite sources for specific information, but groups her citations together for family groups, you can't tell whether she relied upon a good source or a flawed genealogy for specific pieces of information. Bessie is a source, but not necessarily the "best" source. The article "Hallenbeck Family of New York", National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 65, (June, 1977), by Robert Vincent Anderson, is generally considered quite good for the first few generations (as far as it goes) of the family. Most of it is available at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/7705/HalenbeckFamily.htm although the poster managed to inadvertently skip one page. There's a Hallenbeck research community at http://members.aol.com/Rdkone/hollenbeck.html although a lot of the links are broken. Jim
Hi, Can anyone tell me the location of this cemetery? It is not a name I am familiar with, although I have been to several cemteries in the area. I would like to try and get there one of these days to do some gravestone photography/research, now that I know that I have several ancestors buried there. Hi The best genealogyon the Hallenbeck family that I found (1965 -1970) is by Bessie Shaver, I saw the original in the public library in Pittsfield,. Mass. Copies were in the NYS Library in Albany, and in the Puiblic Library in New York City on fifth avenue. There are probably other copies. It had hundreds of pages. I onlyabstracted my own lines of interest. I have often wished I had time to go back and study more of it. I had several lines: Casper Jacobse b about 1623 was in the Albany area around 1650, He had several children. Catherine masrried Jurruan Van Hoesen, providing one of my lines; Jan Casper married Rachel Willemse Hoffmeier, of his several children Marytje married Jurruan Klauw, (their Son Johannes and Daughter Rachel are both ancestors) Son Casper and Dau Rachel Hallenbeck along with the Klauws hads grandchildren inter marry until they all combinedin my family tree; William Hallenbeck Jan's other son also provides a separate direct line. There is also a Jacob Casperse whose descendents show up marrying into my Van Buskirks, and lived in Tully. These families are the ones I follow, and my full genealogy report covers more than 100 pages, because it incorporates most of my family research - 3 of my 4 grandparents are involved. Most of the actual Hallenbeck data is from the immigrant Casper Jacobse to about 1780s, only twol ines to 1808 in Central NY. Connecting the dots to your ancestors is definitely possible, but not in my files yet. good luck. If you like I can queue up reports on the several lines in manageable segments. Jeremy, This is a rough sketch of one of the Hallenbeck lines you mentioned. It could use some more work as it relies on will abstracts, selected census returns and gravestones. Jim. 1. Unfortunately, I have not had much luck tracing the Hallenbeck portion of my family- there were a lot of Hallenbecks around the area back then, and I am having trouble figuring out which (if any) of them are ancestors. Here is all that I know for sure: My great-grandmother Helen M. Bush (Hallenbeck) was born July 28,1905. Her parents were William T. Hallenbeck b. May 18, 1874 d. June 30, 1940 and Francis Lake Burdick b. March 24, 1874 d. February 14, 1940. William's parents were James R. Hallenbeck (no other info) and Harriet Hallenbeck (not sure if this was her maiden name), b. March 1, 1845. Helen married Leonard Bush, who also has Hallenbecks in his background, just to make things more complicated :) Leonard was born March 27, 1895, to William Henry Bush b. January 1, 1835 d. February 6, 1906 and Anna C. Hallenbeck, b. January 1864 d. 1920. The Bush line I am able to trace back quite a ways, but the Hallenbeck line (on both sides) is giving me some trouble! Now that I am living back in the area again, I am going to try and spend some time at the Vedder Library and other local resources and see if I can make any progress with any of this.... My father's side of the family and my mother's maternal side are giving me even more trouble than the Hallenbeck line! It gets frustrating at times, but I am very interested in all of this, and have been since I was in Elementary School. Hi All of the names you cite are familiar, they are repeated many times in each family, but again mosat of my data stops a generation too soon. I did check Schermerhorn, and founnd eleven times that one of them married into my family tree. one in Valkenburgh, 4 in Winne, 3 Hallenbeck, 3 bradt, also van vechten, and one Simon J Schermerhorn was the first husband of WillemjeViele who married Levanus Winne, back in the late 1600s. I do not have any connectors in the Schermerhorn lines. I have my files in family tree maker. I can do genealogy reports, rather lengthy by attachments. It may be overwhelming to send the reports to show a single marriage. Or I can send a dozen smaller clips. They would not showthe family naming patterns. Can you find more on the individuals in Catskill in 1810? I am sure they belong within my families, perhaps even in the immediate family I stop with. Let me know how to proceed. Dear Annette, I recently found out that my husband's great grandmother was Sarah Marie Overbaugh Grant Post, her mother was Mary Brandow who was married to William Overbaugh. Could you tell me any information on that branch of the family? Thank You in advance. I'm a Brandow nut, that's for sure!!! I know Bruce Smith of California. We correspond frequently only if to say hello and he likes to send me photos of his flower gardens which are beautiful. To all the Brandow descendents---Happy Spring and happy searching. May we all find that elusive family member hiding in another state somewhere to complete the twig or branch. > > > > > > > ==== NYGREENE Mailing List ==== > Greene County - Abstracts of Wills 1800-1900 - going on-line now! > http://www.rootsweb.com/~nygreen2 > > ============================== > View and search Historical Newspapers.
