Many thanks to Georgia, Jan & Sandie for their help. I will continue to look for more information on James & his wife Phebe, 2nd wife Hannah. I wonder what happened to children George & Adeline. Is there someone who would do a lookup of birth for R Bruce b c1881, or marriage of Thomas & Esther Snyder in Claverack c1880. I am trying to find how this Herrick family may 'connect' to Smith Herrick of Saugerties/Woodstock. I surmise, from the census records, Phebe Herrick passed away, James remarried, moved to Woodstock. Thomas met Esther Snyder in Claverack, they both lived there in 1880, her siblings worked in the cotton mill, as did Thomas, they then moved to Woodstock. All I have on Adelbert H. Finch is that he was born April 2, 1841 and died May 27, 1870 - buried with parents in Acra cemetery. Now Acra is about 1-2 miles from the Town of Durham border. If someone lived around Sunside, which is in Durham, right on that border, it is very possible you would be buried in the Acra cemetery. Thanks, both Sylvia and Laurie for the information - and so quickly! Sylvia, I have the same info about his wives. My 2nd great-grandfather, Israel Huse, had a sister Desire who "was wife of Mr. Finch and died of shock after near-drowning", according to family oral tradition, provided by her niece - a near-enough relative to be fairly reliable. I have no dates and no first name for Finch. But Desire lived in Durham and I found this info about her on your website: "According to Baptist Church Records in Catskill, in 1824 Desire Huse 'removed from Catskill Baptist Church'". I speculate that she may have left that church to marry Mr. Finch, in which case she might have been his 1st wife, possibly the mother of Adelbert and/or his daughter Adeline (age 18 in the 1850 census). You have helped me research this in the past, but we've never found anything else about her. Israel Huse had a son named Adelbert also. But I must stress that this is unproven speculation on my part . . . could Desire "Hall" who m. Ezra Finch (date unkn) be my Desire "Huse" or "Hues" who m. a Mr. Finch sometime after 1823 in Greene Co? I've never found any indication that another Finch from Greene County ever was married to a woman named "Desire" (especially right from Durham, the home of my Huse family). Desire is a family name - she was probably named for her great-grandmother Desire Farrington, the wife of Jonathan Harrison of New Haven Co CT; also for her mother's sister Desire Tyler. The name Huse/Hues is misspelled many times in family genealogies, census indexes etc. The Noble Family genealogy spells the name "Hawes", I have found them indexed as "Head", "Heels" and "Hires", as well as Heus, Hewis, Hewes, Hughs, and Hughes. It's not a stretch that it might be listed as "Hall" in a book about the Finch family, especially as no source is provided for the information, and it may have been the "best" recollection of some descendant or the best read of an illegible handwritten document. Frustrating! But I haven't given up hope that I might someday find the proof, whichever path it takes. Does anybody have information about Adeline or Adelbert Finch - apparently children of Ezra? I need to get back on the website, Sylvia, and catch up my research. One thing I can always be sure of - you are constantly updating the information there - thanks very much for that! Nope. This is a strange census - it does not group people into families; it is merely a straight line listing of people, their ages and a few more details. The only 1892 census that is readily available iss for Athens and it can be found on the Greene Co website. The will of Sally Waterhouse 7Sep1851 names a niece Janet Avery as well as Zena Whittlesey, Jedidiah Dudley-nephews and Betsey C. Barker as niece. Lydia Bushnell as a sister. Witnesses to will were J.B. and H. B. Cowles. Sally was born in Saybrook, CT. as were Cowles and Dudleys. Can anyone identify Janette/Jane/Genet wife of Edmund Wyllis Avery? Is she the same Janet named in these estates? My thanks to all who give their attention to this post. Any help is appreciated. Georgia in PA
I have some Tietsoort ancestry: WILLEM ABRAHAMSE TIETSOORT, who was the first person with this name in America. Heres a link to some biographical information that was helpful to me: http://www.teachout.org/du/013.html In previus pages on this site, more variations of the name are given. I ran across the name Thietshoorn while looking at my cd of New York Births & Baptisms. This was for a Rebekka married to Juriann Kwik (also with various spellings). In other records her name was spelled Tietsoort, Tietsoord, Titsso, and Tizzo. There may be others, but it looks like Teetshorn definitely could have started out as Tietsoort.
