May the grace of God be with you all who have lost loved ones in wartime. Annette Campbell
Two weeks ago I returned from a trip to France to visit my cousin and to see where my mother and her family lived. During this trip I had the privilege to visit Normandy. We went to Omaha, Juno and Utah beach. I had the honor of walking where my father and his fellow soldiers fought for the freedom for our world. The same places where many men & women lost their lives. Men & women from many nations. Every single Frenchman I met remembers it well. They honor our young soldiers every chance they get. The fallacy of Americans who believe that we are not liked in France is just that. The most impressive place we visited was the American cemetery. Over 9,300 soldiers are buried there. As we stood there my wife, my cousin and her husband and I all had tears in our eyes. We all have to remember our men and women who serve our country no matter what we believe, no matter our political leanings. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Annette Campbell" <anncamp@linkny.com> To: <NYGREENE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 29, 2005 10:48 AM Subject: [GREENE COUNTY] Memorial Day > May the grace of God be with you all who have lost loved ones in wartime. > Annette Campbell > > > ==== NYGREENE Mailing List ==== > The Diary of John Barr, Ensign in the Revolutionary War. Thank you for your time on this. I'm just about lost on this. I just recently found a Mary Hallenbeck age 4, living with a John & Hannah Clough, in the 1850 Athens Census. Which doesn't prove any thing without records. Thats the closest I can come to a "Mary" Hollenbeck. OK, Thanks again for looking. I'll keep trying. "New York's Detailed Census of 1855 - Greene County" was published by Fred Q. Bowman in 1988. The census has also been microfilmed and can be borrowed through your local Family History Library. The only Hollenbecks listed in the Town of Durham in 1855 were as follows: Daniel (42), wife Hannah (41), children Edward H. (20), Robert D. (14), Charles A. (11), Harlan D. (8) Isaac (41), wife Agnes (54), children Peter (18), William (16), Eliza (14), Mary (11), John (7) William (52), wife Julia (42), children Malvina (15), Eleanor (12), Edward (11), Ambrose (8) A 13 year old Joseph Hallenbeck resided in Coxsackie with the John Clow family and a black family headed by Joseph Hallenbeck (31), brothers Wm (29) and Abram (26), mother Jane (54) and Robert Brandow (12) resided in Athens. It is located on the Farber Farm along County Route 23C, a short distance west of its intersection with Losee Road and less than two miles west of the East Jewett Methodist Church. It is protected from the livestock by a stone wall but can easily be missed, especially when the corn is high, as it sits back from the road. A couple years ago the Town of Jewett put up signs near each of the town's cemeteries, so this one should be marked too. > Do you know where the smaller, second cemetery on Olive's list is located? > I haven't found it yet myself.
he only Mary Hollenbeck in the 1855 Greene Co census is living in the household of Isaac Hollenbeck, a furnaceman in the Town of Durham, aged 41y, b. Greene Co, living in the Town of Durham for 17 years, his wife Agnes, aged 54y, b. Greene Co, also living in the Town of Durham 17 years, and children: Peter, a furnaceman, , aged 18y, 18 years in Durham, b. Greene, William, also a furnaceman, aged 16, Eliza, aged 14, Mary, aged 11, and John aged 7 Using the Hallenbeck spelling - there is a Mary J. aged 18, in the household of Casper Hallenbeck in Athens. In another Casper J Hallenbeck houshold, also in Athens there is a Mary L. aged 10 In a Jacob P. Hallenbeck household in Athens, a Mary C, aged 13 Another Jacob P. Hallenbeck household in Cairo, a Mary aged 7 A Jehockan Hallenbeck in Athens has Mary aged 2 A John Hallenbeck in Athens has mary, aged 2 A Martin Hallenbeck in Coxsackie has Mary aged 21 A William B. Hallenbeck in Cairo has a Mary A. aged 18 Note - there is NO household with a Joseph as head of household. Hollenbeck and Hallenbeck were often written interchangeably. Anyone out there know where the Arthut Cromwell farm is/was? Looking for the location of the Flamsburgh Cemetery. Help! Sylvia
Thank you for this additional information, Patricia. As I am not interpreting or correcting information from the source material I post, I will add a postscript to each page with your correct information. Your continued vigilance in ensuring the right information is available is definitely appreciated and welcome! Thanks!! Do you know where the smaller, second cemetery on Olive's list is located? I haven't found it yet myself. "On the other hand, I've also thought that finding all mentions of a person s date of death would resolve any ambiguities in a transcription of a gravestone by a person without such knowledge." ------------------ This would be great if one had tons of free time. If I were transcribing for a specific person, I would definitely do this, as I do it in my own research. However when doing whole cemeteries for county websites or towns this is impossible especially when they are large. If I have a question regarding a date I put a question mark stating that I'm not sure of the numbers, and I go back again and again to try different techniques and angles. I for one try my best to get an accurate date. I also ask for input, if someone knows of a missing stone or the date is wrong or can add information, great lets add it. As for the person you all are referring to, its hard to say what happened, perhaps someone will go take a look and see what they find. Could be the date on stone is accurate, as I stated earlier, I've found in my personal research that dates can be off by a year or the date of death is actually the burial date. It can be very frustrating. Rene'
Rene wrote: >As a transcriber of cemeteries myself I have found these kinds of mistakes >common. On the other hand, I've also thought that finding all mentions of a person's date of death would resolve any ambiguities in a transcription of a gravestone by a person without such knowledge. However, I can't remember the specific person, but a bible record of her death date didn't agree with the probate record of her death date, and neither of these agreed with the date on the gravestone. The local, contemporary obitituaries in two papers didn't agree with each other, but in each case, did agree with one of the three dates from the above sources. Maybe she died around midnight on one of these dates, but that doesn't explain all of this. Jim
As a transcriber of cemeteries myself I have found these kinds of mistakes common. First of all depending on what kind of shape the stones are in, they can be very difficult to transcribe. But most common of all, I have found deaths to sometimes be listed as a year later than they actually happened - the only conclusion that I can come to is that the stones are put there at a much later date and that loved ones have by then forgotten the actual date or have used the burial date instead of death date. Very good reason to always check sources, and do not take the word of the internet as gospel. Even though most of us mean well, it is often our interpretation. A recent inquiry has uncovered more mistakes in Olive Woodworth's book "East Kill Valley Genealogy" and the transcription of gravestones in the East Jewett Cemetery. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nygreen2/east_kill_valley_genealogy.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~nygreen2/east_jewett_cemetery.htm Both lists state that Luther A. The hamlet of Oak Hill is located in the Town of Durham, so vital records would be in the custody of the Durham Town Clerk. Unfortunately New York State did not require its clerks to keep such records until the 1880s. The Greene County Courthouse in Catskill, the Durham Center Museum in East Durham, the Greene County Historical Society's Vedder Memorial Library in Coxsackie and the New York State Library in Albany would be your best sources of information. Send her name and what you know to this list. She should be listed on the 1855 census. Patricia Morrow, Windham Town Historian (Greene County, NY) > I have a GGgrandmother born in Oak Hill Greene Co. Sylvia, OK thanks, I'll certainly try those places. Appreciate the info Dottie
Dottie - civil records recording birth, death and marriage started in 1882 in New York State. The only locations I can recommend are the Durham Center Museum and the Vedder Library - who hold bible, church and cemetery records.
