Karol you may want to check censuses, to give you an idea of where they may have lived, and hence were buried. The Kipp and Ford names are all over the mountaintop and people were often buried in neighboring towns. You should check Ashland, Windham, Jewett, Hunter and Prattsville cemeteries. There is only two major cemeteries left to transcribe - Pleasant Valley and the newest one in Prattsville - and a few in Hunter too. With luck you may find them Sylvia ----- Original Message ----- From: <KarolHugh@aol.com> To: <NYGREENE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 07, 2005 10:51 AM Subject: [GREENE COUNTY] Ford/Kipp sites in Lexington >I have the chance to take a quick drive thru Greene Co in late July and >want > to visit a couple of family sites. I have the chance to take a quick drive thru Greene Co in late July and want to visit a couple of family sites. I'm descended from Joel and Mary Ford thru their son Philo and also from Benjamin and Sally Kipp thru their daughter Nancy. Can anyone tell me where they are buried? Or where they lived? I saw on a map that there is a Kipp Hill northwest of Lexington. Is it safe to assume the Kipps lived in that area? Did the Fords live in that direction, too? I checked Sylvia's Lexington cemeteries and didn't see what I was looking for. Unfortunately there is no time for research, but at least I'll be able to say I've been there. We're adding a day to vacation so my husband can see Hyde Park and I get to Greene Co. Thanks for any help or suggestions. Karol
Thanks to Fred Boughton and Donald Hotchkiss for responding to my Hotchkiss posting. However the information sent is not the Augustus Hotchkiss I am searching for. Perhaps I did not include enough information in my orginal posting. I have previously been in touch with Joan Johnson at the Hotchkiss Family Association and she has records of two Augustus Hotchkiss's, neither of them are my ancestor. She did provide one clue from the files of the late Shirley Nixon; that my Augustus married Ann Tyler, but there was no documentation of where Shirley got this information. The 1850, 1855, 1860 census for Delaware County, NY all indicate that my Augustus was married to an "Ann", but I have had no surname. The 1855 NY state census indicates that Ann was born in Westchester County c1796, however this conflicts with the 1865 NY state census that indicates that Ann was born in Albany County. I've checked the 1800 census and found TYLER's in Westchester County, none in Albany County, but a TYLER is in Schoharie County (Schoharie was originally part of Albany County and was spun off in 1795). I'm researching these leads to see where they go. The reason I made the post on the Greene County website was that I found that there was an Augustus Hotchkiss who served in the 12 Reg't Cavalry (Boughton's), New York Militia during the War of 1812. I have sent for his service record, but not received it yet. In researching Boughton's Reg't., I found that it was Seymore Boughton located in Ontario County, NY; however I found that Seymore Boughton was in Summit, Schoharie County in 1810, so I thought that there might be a Greene County connection with my Augustus since Seymore was there in 1810. I found it very curious that "Fred Boughton" responded to my email--is there a connection to Seymore Boughton? The information I have for Augustus is outlined below: 1820 census-Augustus is in Roxbury, Delaware County, NY 1830 census-Augustus is in Delhi, Delaware County, NY 1840 census-Augustus is in Hamden, Delaware County, NY 1850 census-Augustus is in Hamden, Delaware County, NY 1855 census-Augustus is in Hamden, Delaware County, NY 1860 census-Augustus is in Hamden, Delaware County, NY 1865 census-wife Ann is living with her daughter Laura Ann Fish in Hamden, Delaware County, NY apparently Augustus died between 1860 and 1865 1870 census-wife Ann is living with her daughter Laura Ann Fish in Hamden, Delaware County, NY 1878 Obit- Anna, relict of Augustus Hotchkiss died in North Hamden 2 January 1878. The 1850.1855, and 1860 census all indicate that Augustus was born in Connecticut; however the information on his age conflicts: 1850 census indicates that he was born c1797 1855 census indicates that he was born c1798 1860 census indicates that he was born c1800 Two of the census (1830 & 1855) indicate a middle initial "R"; the 1840 census appears to be an "B". Augustus and Ann Hotchkiss had the following children that I know of: Laura Ann b. c1819; married Charles Fish Thomas b. c1824; married Priscilla John b. October 1825; married Susan My hope when I made the post a couple of days ago was that one of the HOTCHKISS's in Greene County would be connected to my Augustus: in Durham, George HOTCHKISS, Henry HOTCHKISS, and Lemuel HOTCHKISS; and in Windham, John HOTCHKISS. There are two major and distinct GROAT lines that originate in New York. One was of Dutch ancestry and arrived in Albany in the 1600's and you'll find it spelled Groat and DeGroat. The second (mine) originated with Johannes Groat/Kradt/Graet/Craat/Grod/Grad/Gradt. etc., etc., who was among the German Palatine immigrants settled along the Hudson in 1710. This second family settled primarily in what is now Columbia County. You may read about Johannes and his first through sixth generation descendants on my web page (based on a book I published in 1986) at: http://home.midsouth.rr.com/groatline/Index.html Just click on the link to GROAT. At the bottom of the Table of Contents, you'll find a link to the "All Name Index" which links the individuals to their appropriate pages. There has been a great deal of intentional or unintentional garbling of these two families, primarily by some who wished to gain entry into the Holland Society. Several have gained membership only later to be expelled. I hope this helps. If I can be of further help, just let me know. Thanks for your email. In addition to the information you sent, I found the following posted on the Greene County website by Joyce Riedinger: "HENRY GROAT, a prominent merchant of Delhi, was born at Prattsville, Greene County, N.Y., February 15, 1869, a son of John and Catherine (Gilbert) Groat. His grandfather, John A. Groat, was a native of Dutchess County, and a prominent farmer. He afterward moved to Greene County, and purchased a farm there. His son John remained on the farm, assisting his father until 1861, when he enlisted in the Fifteenth New York Heavy Artillery, and served with distinction until the war was nearly over, being discharged on account of disability from wounds received in action. He resided for a time in Greene, county, but afterward moved to Gilboa, of which place he is still a resident. He married Miss Catherine Gilbert, daughter of William M. Gilbert, a prominent foundryman of Greene County; and two children were born to them-Henry and Charles." This information seems to fit with the information you sent. You reference John GROAT twice in your email: 1) "I have that John was born abt. 1774 in Columbia Co., NY"; 2) "John GROAT (wife Mercy) d. 10/25/1863, aged 83y and buried in Mountain Valley Cemetery in the town of Ashland, Greene Co. NY". It appears that you have two different birth dates for the same John, 1774 & 1780. However, it appears that your John GROAT is the same as the grandfather, John A. GROAT referred to above. If this is true, then it appears that the "John Groat, Jr. (1832)" you refer to is the husband of Catherine (Gilbert) GROAT and the father of Henry and Charles GROAT. If John GROAT Sr. was born in 1774, he could have been the father of my Margaret GROAT--he would have been 20 when Margaret was born c1794; if he was born in 1780, he possible was Margaret's brother. The fact that they were born in different counties, Columbia & Greene, 14 years apart is certainly possible. Dick .

I am researching the lineage of Margaret GROAT. The 1855 NY State Census it indicates that she was born in Greene County c1794. In the 1810 census there is a John GROAT in Windham, Greene County. Also, there is a John GROAT in the 1800 census in Albany County. Somewhere in the cobwebs of my memory, I think I remember that Greene County was previously part of Albany County. Margaret GROAT was married 1 September 1808 in Kortright, Delaware County, to Daniel FISH. I would appreciate it if anyone could help me connect Margaret GROAT to John GROAT. Dick Dodge Houston, TX
I am researching the lineage of Augustus HOTCHKISS (b. c1795 in Connecticut); he was in Delaware County in 1820 and died in Hamden, Delaware County c1865. In the 1810 census there are four HOTCHKISS's in Greene County: in Durham, George HOTCHKISS, Henry HOTCHKISS, and Lemuel HOTCHKISS; and in Windham, John HOTCHKISS. I would appreciate it if anyone has any information that any of these HOTCHKISS's might be related to Augustus. Dick Dodge Houston, TX
Is there someone on the list who contacted me ablout the above person? Sylvia
Hi! My son visited Normandy a few years back when a student. He came away with the same sentiments as you did. He told us the people in Normandy were wonderful to them. The old saying, you can't judge a book by its cover, the same you can't judge a country by some of the people or their leaders. This week I think the French people have let their voice be heard by the EU vote. We also have to remember their were many French men and women who gave their lives for freedom in the underground. Glad you posted your note we all need to see and read the positive. Virginia Sanok Love is Silence when Words would Hurt. __________________________________ Yahoo! Mail Mobile Take Yahoo! That is so true. So many people seem to think as long as it didn't affect them directly, so what. All those lives lost are sacred lives. They all died believing they were doing thier part to keep America free. We must do ours and honor those gone before us and support those protecting us today. Carol G
In Flanders Fields In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. - -Col.
