Sylvia, Welcome back. I hope your weather was better than ours. I see, from your posting to Cliff Hayes, that you are currently completing Pleasant Valley's records to go on-line. Do you have an idea when this may be ready to post ? Bob Cummings
Hello everyone. Back from vacation in Europe - had a great time! And ready to get back into posting material to the list and transcribing cemeteries. I''ll be heading to the Vedder Library to do some research the first Thursday evening and the first Saturday morning in August. As most of you know, I can do look ups for a modest fee. Family files, probate records, newspaper records etc. If anyone is interested, let me know. Many may be wondering - I use these fees to acquire new material for the site. Hope everyone is having a wonderful summer! Sylvia
Hi Cliff, the cemetery is, as yet, not transcribed or online. I am currently completing Ashland's Pleasant Valley, then Farilawn is next on my list. Likely it will be online towards the end of this year. Does anyone know whether or not data for the Fairlawn Cemetery in Prattsville has been put on line? I think that the records are maintained in Prattsville and I would be willing to help digitize the records for posting on line if anyone can get copies of the records for me and let me know the format. Several of my relatives are now permanent residents there: Fredenburgh, Gortych, Hayes, Humphrey, Rikard, Southard, perhaps others. Cliff Hayes cliff.hayes@earthlink.net
Patricia, Once again, thank you. www.woodstockhistory.org: From "Complete Record, as required by hapter 690, of the Laws of 1865, Relating to Officers......Composing the quotas of Troops Furnished to the US, by the Town of Woodstock.............In the War of the Rebellion, and covering the period from the 15 day of April 1861 ......................" Levi Edson, born 1 Sep 1847 Woodstock, parents Lewis Edson & Delia Morse, enlisted as private in 15th NY Co F for 1 yr, 17 Oct 1864, discharged 3 Jun 1865. Delia/Adelide & Levi are indeed in both Schoharie & Woodstock Census in 1850. Levi would have been 17 at enlistment. He was in MI by 1870. Delia's parents were Daniel & Elizabeth. Here's an article that was published last year at http://genealogyblog.com/?p=2159. These census records have now been transferred to the new county office building at 411 Main Street, Catskill, NY. Greene Co NY Censuses William Dollarhide Mon, Jun 14, 2004 If you have ancestors who lived in Greene County, New York between 1830 and 1880, you probably have seen the federal censuses. This is a unique county in America for censuses, there are original sets of the federal censuses still sitting in the courthouse, in addition to the federal copies available on microfilm. It was the federal copies that were microfilmed by the National Archives. For all counties, the original copy remained in the courthouse. But finding these originals is difficult for most counties — they are few and far between because the locals never had any incentive to save them. Many New York counties did save their originals, and Greene County is a good example. As a review of New York State Censuses & Substitutes, here is what you can expect for Greene County: 1830-1880 Federal Censuses (County Copies), Greene County, New York. These are the original federal censuses, retained in the County Clerk's office, Catskill, New York. Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1966. (Hand copies of the original census books were made here – a copy sent to Washington, DC, where the copy, not the original, was eventually microfilmed by the National Archives). Comparisons should be made between the county's original copy and the federal copy, because transcription errors were common, particularly for spelling errors. The original federal censuses at the Greene County Courthouse were filmed as follows: 1830 (federal census, county's original copy), FHL film #480074. Compare with the federal copy on FHL film #17150. 1840 (federal census, county's original copy), FHL film #480074. Compare with the federal copy on FHL film #17189. 1850 (federal census, county's original copy), FHL film #480075. Compare with the federal copy on FHL film #17085-17086. 1860 (federal census, county's original copy), FHL film #480076. Compare with the federal copy on FHL film #803758. 1870 (federal census, county's original copy), FHL film #480078. Compare with the federal copy on FHL film #552439. 1880 (federal census, county's original copy), FHL film #480080. Compare with the federal copy on FHL film #1254836-1254837.
According to "The Heritage of New Baltimore," Bicentennial Committee, Town of New Baltimore, New York, 1976: "Staco Cemetery or Palmer Cemetery (end of Featherbed Lane on Staco Road) Quaker Meeting House stood here until 1891." Staco Road is in the northwest corner of the Town of New Baltimore, just east of the Greenville-New Baltimore town line and south of the border between Albany and Greene counties. Featherbed Lane lies in both towns and runs in a more or less east-west direction. Patricia Morrow, Windham Town Historian (Greene County, NY) >Can anyone tell me where Staco Cemetery is located. For info purposes, my GG uncles, William Vincent Carman was married to Amilia Tompkins who died in 1861 and is buried in the Rensslaerville Cemetery in Albany County, but is just across the county line from Greene County. William Vincent Carman died as a POW in the Andersonville Prison in Ga. in 1864. There are other Tompkins buried there also. I've been telling researchers for years that they can find Greene County deeds, from 1800 to the present, at the Greene County Courthouse in Catskill. These records were recently moved to the new county office building located at 411 Main Street in Catskill, across the street from the Village of Catskill Police Department Headquarters. You are definitely going to like the new location. There is free parking next to and behind the building, as well as metered parking on the street. There are elevators and restrooms on each floor. The ladies' room on the second floor has three stalls, three sinks and a fold-down diaper changing table. I can't provide details on the men's facilities, but I assume they are comparable. Water fountains are just outside the restrooms. Police and metal detectors are stationed at each entrance. All briefcases and bags are searched when you enter the building. Food and water are not permitted in the building and will be confiscated. The clean, air conditioned, well-lit Records Room is located on the second floor if using the elevator, or street level if you enter the building through the front doors. No more ladders to climb. All of the books are shelved either under the tables or on racks around the room. Besides deeds you will also find mortgages, Records of Incorporation, maps and some census records in this room. Photocopies are 25 cents per page. The copy machine takes coins and bills. The only thing you will have to grow accustomed to is the chorus of ringing cell phones that all of the employees from title and abstract companies carry. Patricia Morrow, Windham Town Historian (Greene County, NY)
I found Peter Frayer and his wife Margaret in the 1850 census - can anyone help with this line? I am looking for the parentage of Frank Freyer and his wife Emily who are listed in the 1860 census (Greene County). There is a Jane listed, age 18, apparently she is listed in the 1850 census with Peter and Margaret. Rolene Kiesling, Groveland, CA
A follow up to my last post about Harlem G. Tompkins. After the death of his second wife, Margaret E. (Rowe) Shelley, Harlem married Mrs. Sarah Jane (Myers) Tompkins. Sarah, the daughter of Adam and Sally (White) Myers, was born 30 Apr 1838 in Prattsville, married Nathaniel D. Tompkins (he died in 1891) and died 13 Apr 1915 in Ashland at the age of 77. She was buried in Ashland's West Settlement Cemetery beside her first husband. She was survived by three children from her first marriage: sons Homer E. and Sanford H. Tompkins, and daughter, Mrs. David Hummell. Patricia Morrow, Windham Town Historian (Greene County, NY)
