As I have been doing my research I have come across a question that I know my fellow Greene County researchers can probably answer. I have found that an ancestor in Western Massachusetts served in the Revolutionary War as a guard in Vermont for 2 3 month terms, I also found an ancestor who eventually resided in Greene County served in the War in Connecticut for the period of the war, but I have not been able to determine if the ancestor who resided in Schenectady during the Revolutionary war ever served. Can anyone tell me what percentage of males served in the war? And is it possible that none of the males in a family from Schenectady area ever served in the revolutionary war. Thanks Shelley Fox Shelley Fox shelley.fox@earthlink.net Why Wait? Move to EarthLink.

I am seeking information about the following folks who are my ancestors on Mother's side. This is the information I have found from census reports. Eli Wright b.1832 New York Eliza Wright b.1836 d. Avesta b.1853? or 12/1849? s. Bradford b.1858 _______________________________________________ Avesta Wright Greene b.?12/31/1854 RICHARD(?) Greene__ b.__10/1847? New York s.Herbert Wright Greene s. Omar Vivien__( this son was a business man or salesman, as he vanished while on a trip to Salt Lake City. I don't know if his first name was Omar or Vivien.) I have a Civil War diary (partial) which has no name inside, but seems to indicate that perhaps this Richard? Greene enlisted from NY and served with the 156th Regiment Infantry, mustered in November 1862 and left for Louisiana. I have more information about this soldier gleaned from the diary is anyone is seeking him. fineart@sover.net Susan Smith-Hunter Smith-Hunter Gallery 4234 Rte 7 Ethan Allen Highway Ferrisburgh, Vt. 05456-9778 Email: fineart@sover.net

Most of the people did not know how to write or spell. And I have found especially with the indices on Ancestry.com that the people who did the indices are not familiar with the Dutch surnames of the area. What I usually do to find them is do a forename search, as most people (then and now) know how to spell Cornelius or Claude. I put in the forename, state, county and town. when using ancestry.com census records, instead of soundex, another method for finding sur or forenames is to put in the first 3 letters with an asterick, ie: john smith joh* smi* john smi* joh* smi* ----- Original Message ----- From: <smulvey@comcast.net> To: <NYGREENE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 01, 2005 2:32 PM Subject: Re: [GREENE COUNTY] Van Duesen & Delamater > Hi Linda, > > It's not some much the family changing the spelling of their name, it is usually spelled the way the census enumerator hears it. And alot of the time, if a family was not home, the cenus taker just asked a neighbor and any one that was around and they might not know the correct information. > > > In the 1820 census Claverack, Columbia, NY, Roll M33-70, page 66: > Cornelius Van Deusen > 3 males to 10 > 2 males 10 to 16 > 2 males 16 to 26 > 1 male 45 and up > 1 female 10 to 16 > 1 female 26 to 45 > 1 female 45 and up > 5 in agriculture > > In the 1830 census also Claverack, Roll86, page 79 > 2 male 5 to 10 > 1 male 15 to 20 > 1 male 20 to 30 > 1 male to to 60 > 1 female 15 to 20 > 1 female 50 to 60 > > Also in the Dutch Reformed Church of Claverack: > Baptism Date: 29 Nov 1834 > Father: Claudius C. Sandie, Thank you so much for the information and taking the time to look through the census records for me. Will check them out even if the name doesn't appear to be spelled correctly. Have found them listed as Van Densen, Duzen, Dorsen, etc so have to keep checking every clue. Hi, Yes this is the Claude I am looking for. About 8 months prior to their marriage, Claude and Lydia became members of the church. At the time of their joining and marrying Claude was listed as a farmer and Lydia was listed as a seamstress in the home of a Race family. When they joined, atleast Lydia, possibly Claude as well, joined by"confession of faith" To me, this would appear that they were not previously attending this church. Apparently, they were not members of a local church. A Gertrude DeLaMater was the witness. I have gone page by page on all the census records, from 1830 til they appear in 1850 and find no record of them, nor do they show up age and sex wise with any of their possibly family members in areas they are supposed to be in. The AH Van Deusen book listed them as having moved to the Malden Bridge area sometime before 1840. Notice that after about 1838 the baptisms in Claverack stop, there are just no other records of the other children's births or deaths anywhere else in the Chatham/Malden Bridge/Nassau areas. Maybe I am just over thinking all of this and should let it drop, but, guess I just like a good mystery. Thanks again. Hi Linda, It's not some much the family changing the spelling of their name, it is usually spelled the way the census enumerator hears it. And alot of the time, if a family was not home, the cenus taker just asked a neighbor and any one that was around and they might not know the correct information. In the 1820 census Claverack, Columbia, NY, Roll M33-70, page 66: Cornelius Van Deusen 3 males to 10 2 males 10 to 16 2 males 16 to 26 1 male 45 and up 1 female 10 to 16 1 female 26 to 45 1 female 45 and up 5 in agriculture In the 1830 census also Claverack, Roll86, page 79 2 male 5 to 10 1 male 15 to 20 1 male 20 to 30 1 male to to 60 1 female 15 to 20 1 female 50 to 60 Also in the Dutch Reformed Church of Claverack: Baptism Date: 29 Nov 1834 Father: Claudius C. Hello Susan, Thank you so much for the information, that is the family I am looking for. My problem is attempting to locate Cornelius and his son Claude from the time period of 1820 to 1840.With what you have told me, their strange penchant for changing their name had been going on for awhile. There are three strange possiblities that bring this about, they were actaully not giving the correct name, someone had a speech impediment, they got the worst of the enumerators.Though I did notice in the 1855 or 65 Kinderhook census, the enumerator was upset beause he was meeting with a great deal of resisitance to his questions and either getting no information or incomplete answers. Will check out the name VanDrum, the name VanDensen was also a name I found them as, on the 1850 census in Chatham . So I will go back and redo the census records under alot of other names I hadn't thought of. I do so appreciate all that you are doing with your site, it is great! If you ever need help transcribing please let me know. Another question, if I get back down the the state library, is there something you are interested in from there? Thanks again, you mayhave solved a long standing mystery. In answer to the last posting: We do seem to have a very loving, helpful, caring group of family searchers and just plain family here on the Greene County LIST. We don't have yours and mine, we have "our" findings and share with each other willingly as it should be. What I happen upon is all yours for the asking, anything that fills in the holes in our search is wonderful. We all care much for our untiring leader, Sylvia, God Bless and take care of her everyday in her help to each and every one of us in trodding all those cemeteries in poison ivy and heat and whatever critters she encounters. To everyone, have a safe and happy rest of the summer, cooler weather is coming soon. Annette Campbell

Hi I have a booklet genealogy someone sent me years ago, that includes the family you mention: Johannes Van Deusen and Christynje De la mater they had 6 children plus a7th by a second wife. Chikdren Ariantje Gloudje, Cornelis, John, Ariantje, Jacobus. the 7th by Marytje Bronck is SAaartje. The booklet follows Jacobus 's family. I can send a genealogy report by attachment, but the lists do not like attachments. send me a direct e-mail and I will reply with the report. Johannes is son of Tobias, who is son of Robert and Corelia Van Buren. Tobias's brother Robert is my ancestor. I can expand more if you like. good luckJOHN C VAN BUSKIRK http://www.geocities.com/vanbus1/ jvanbus1@twcny.rr.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "smulvey" <smulvey@comcast.net> To: <NYGREENE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 28, 2005 8:53 PM Subject: Re: [GREENE COUNTY] Van Duesen & Delamater > Hi Linda, > Not sure if this is the family your are looking for but I thought I would > send in anyway as the names are the same. > > From the book: "Marriage Record of Reformed Church, Claverack, New York > 1717-1899" transcribed by Arthur C.M. A Cornelius Vanhoesen appears in the 1820 census for Cairo and also in Lexington in Greene Co. There is also a Cornelius J. Vanhoesen in Hudson, Columbia Co. in 1820. I realize this spelling is not correct but that is the closest it came to VanDeusen when I did a search by first name only. In 1830 there is a Cornelius Vanhoosen in Windham and a Cornelius I. Van Deusen in Stuyvesant, Columbia Co. For 1840. Cornelius Vandeusen at Berne in Albany Co., Cornelius Vandusen in Palatine, Montgomery Co. (actually two there); Cornelius Vandusen at Nassau, Rensselaeer Co., Cornelius C. Vandusen at Claverack, Columbia Co., Cornelius Vanduser at New York City, Ward 13 1850 Cornelius Van Deusen in Claverack, Columbia Co. born about 1841, same spelling at Mohawk, Montgomery Co. born about 1800 and Cornelius C. at Claverack, Columbia Co. born about 1809. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Grstmll@yahoo.com" <grstmll@yahoo.com> To: <NYGREENE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 28, 2005 7:58 AM Subject: Re: [GREENE COUNTY] Vedder research > Good Morning, > So glad that you had a great trip to Europe and are back with renewed > "vigor" You site is priceless. > In reference to your offer to do research, I was wondering if you might > be able to help me establish the location of my 5th great grandfather in > Greene County. > In 1813 Lynje DeLaMater wife of Cornelius VanDeusen inherited from her > father Claude property in Coxsackie, right next to her brother Robert. It is truly wonderful the response I have gotten from Frances Powell, Joyce Trudell, Patricia Morrow, Janice and Robert Carman. I not only got an answer to my Staco Cemetery question but more pertenient information on my ancestors. My husband Dan, thinks everyone connected with this site are special. Everyone shares their information as family (and in some cases we are). Thank you so much to all the above people. I hope I did not leave anyone out. We leave for NY next week and I am so elated to go back to the Catskills. It has been since childhood for me. I will do more research, visit the graves of those family members I can and see a cousin I have reconnected with after all these years. It will be a homecoming. Again my heartfelt thanks to Jane Freese for bringing me together with my Tompkins family. I will always be grateful to you. Pray for our safe trip from Georgia. Virginia S. In the fall, Bob. I have completed about 100 sones so far. It is a very large cemetery and it will likely take me a month or so to get it written down, then I need to type it up. So, hang tight! Good Morning, So glad that you had a great trip to Europe and are back with renewed "vigor" You site is priceless. In reference to your offer to do research, I was wondering if you might be able to help me establish the location of my 5th great grandfather in Greene County. In 1813 Lynje DeLaMater wife of Cornelius VanDeusen inherited from her father Claude property in Coxsackie, right next to her brother Robert. I do have Cornelius in that area in 1810, but seem to lose them between the Will date and 1850! They were apparently married in Columbia County, but believe their principle residence was Coxsackie as they had atleast two children baptized there. Not sure what records are available there, but would appreciate if you could use your knowledge as to where to look. Thank you for your time, and please let me know if you would like the fee prior to your visit to the library. I can send you a check right away.. Thanks again, Linda VanDeusen-Kintzing Sylvia Hasenkopf <esi@francomm.com> wrote: Hello everyone. Back from vacation in Europe - had a great time!
